Tv streaming problems

Have a Sony Bravia, a few years old tops. Prime video has always been iffy on it - managed about 5 episodes of something a while ago but usually the response when I open the app ranges from a blank screen to being able to choose something to watch but not being able to watch it. It's usually nearer the end of thr blank screen though, and the usual fixes of switching TV off, turning WiFi off etc do nothing.

IPlayer is more reliable, as are the other apps, generally only playing up when the weather's bad. The last few days the child's account on the former has been difficult, and tonight the adult account is playing up. Programmes skip back to the beginning after a few mins and, more recently, we get no sound.

Apps are working fine on the phone using the same WiFi (mobile data switched off) and the TV is playing dvds ok.

The TV is up to date with system downloads.

I'm assuming this is a TV problem but is there a fix or do I just get a new one?

I actually think it's a signal quality issue as you say it gets worse during bad weather, that's not something that would happen if it was the TV. Do you get your streaming service via broadband and if so, have you checked the speed you're getting (speedtest.net). It may be a cable is blowing in the wind or rain is getting somewhere it shouldn't.

Different apps will need different bandwidth, with phones needing a lot less than the TV.

Thanks @NomadicSoul . I've just done a test and it's reading between 49 and 68 Mbps on repeated readings.

I use Three mobile broadband so I presume there's nothing I can do unless I change provider? Really interesting what you said about bandwidths, thought all apps used the same (at least those of the same type anyway).

@ElegantlyTouched Okay, that explains it. If it is "mobile", then it will be impacted by bad weather like any radio wave (I used to be a telecommunications engineer). Heavy rain will reduce it as can high winds. And yes, you're stuck with the deterioration in bad weather until you change provider.

As for phones needing less bandwidth (the greater the bandwidth the more information can be sent per second) than a TV, that is due to the screen resolution primarily. A 4K TV needs a minimum of 25mbs, with a recommended 50mbs whereas a phone has a much smaller screen and therefore needs a lot less information. Bear in mind that if you are streaming to multiple devices at once that they will all need a percentage of whatever bandwidth you are receiving. Also remember that the further away from the router any wi-fi device is, the "slower" speed it will receive (test using speedtest on a phone next to the router and then further away).

However, I've done some more reading and it appears that some Sony Bravias's have had problems with the Amazon App. So, just to be on the safe side, , clear the data and cache and uninstall and re-install the Amazon TV app to make sure its not something with that. If it is still an issue and all the other apps are fine, then consider a FireStick as they tend to work better than the TV's own apps and these days they are quite cheap and just need a spare HDMI port. Certainly a lot cheaper than a new TV.
