Moon phases fading?

I’m booked in to get this (not quite the final draft but moons will be the same) on my chest in a few weeks, I’m a bit concerned that in 10 years the moons are just going to be grey blobs. My artist assured me they won’t but im not convinced.

Has anyone similar that are more than a few years old? How do they look now?

I'm only in my 40s so I’m planning to wearing low cut tops for at least another 25 years and the idea of smudgy blobs is very off putting but I do love everything else, and how it will look freshly done.

OP I've had a tattoo for many years on my arm that I regret. My advice to you is don't get it done.

If you're absolutely determined, don't get it on your chest or anywhere it can easily be seen. Get a temporary tattoo instead.

FrothyCothy · 29/10/2024 00:35

There’s an aged tattoos board on Reddit that you might find useful.

Have you got tattoos already? If so how have they healed? With an excellent artist and always wearing sunscreen you might retain the original image for a good bit but those leaf and dotwork details are likely to lose definition over time.

agree with the above that if you’re not absolutely certain, don’t go ahead. Take some thinking time.

LieutenantJumboJr · 29/10/2024 00:36

Thanks but I’m heavily tattooed already, the permanence/placement isn’t an issue for me just how the shaded moons will hold up over time.

What is it about it that you regret? Your poor choice of design or choosing the wrong artist? Rather than putting OP off from the start I think you should provide more context.
One persons tattoo experience with zero context is no help to the OP.

LieutenantJumboJr · 29/10/2024 00:38

I’ve had a look on that Reddit board already and there are some awful moons there but tbh I would think they probably weren’t very nice to begin with.

I'm not in a court of law. I gave an opinion when asked for one.

Have you seen previous work from the artist that includes shading? Even if you get it done and after the healing process has taken place you can always go back for a "recolour" at no further charge with any decent studio. Many of mine are just black ink but "recolours" were needed as my skin often doesn't take ink well. After that they were perfect (also heavily tattooed).

Fine line tattoos don’t tend to hold as long so bare in mind you may need to go for touch ups

HerBloodIsLikeLiquidFire · 29/10/2024 00:47

@username1478
Oh, okay. Feel free to go on the defensive for some reason. Feeling a bit snippy? Again, your experience has no bearing on any other persons experience. Thought I'd repeat in case you didn't understand the first time. On behalf of everyone here, thank you for the wealth of advice in your post Grin enjoy your tattoo.

LieutenantJumboJr · 29/10/2024 00:47

Yes, I have seen their previous work including similar moons but obviously only photos when it was new. It looks amazing, she’s a very talented artist I have no worries about that and I do know that fine detail like that is naturally going to blur over time. I’ve just seen some shockers of faded moons when googling that look awful like pencil eraser smudges and I’d really like to hear from anyone who has this particular type of image themselves for 5+ years

I can attest to fine line tattoos being very well done. I have several, without blowouts. It's the skill of the artist.

HerBloodIsLikeLiquidFire · 29/10/2024 00:52

Best of luck OP. I have a fine line tattoo on my hand, notorious for fading but 8 years down the line it's still perfect.

LieutenantJumboJr · 29/10/2024 00:52

Thank you @HerBloodIsLikeLiquidFire , thats reassuring. This artist has done some beautiful fine line tattoos on me before including a large sternum piece

You're most welcome. I assume you're the forum leader - it's been an honour.

They aren’t the most flattering of designs- most tattoos fade and blur with age ( Have seen old Army and Navy men with ancient tattoos)
The moon phases in Nature are beautiful because they are bright
They aren’t drawn black and grey.

Personally I’d not get that style as it could well look like a necklace of grey beads in time.

Fine line sternum pieces are beautiful!

@username1478
To assume makes an ass of u & me.
Or you know, just you.
Again, enjoy your tattoo. Isn’t that the point of getting one? If you feel so badly about it then pay for a cover up with a design that you like. So sorry that many others enjoy and value theirs. You're not exactly helpful to the heavily tattooed looking for advice on something in particular (which people are allowed to do).

People are allowed to give an opinion when asked based on their experience. It's a public forum where a range of views will be expected.

I didn't ask for advice on what to do with my tattoo but thank you anyway. Your unsolicited opinion is appreciated.

Again, it's been an honour.

It's not for you to bark questions at people and demand answers. It's not for you to decide whose posts are helpful and it's not for you to give unsolicited advice, Hun.

As for the rest, let's hope your tattoos aren't as bad as your banter.

HerBloodIsLikeLiquidFire · 30/10/2024 00:08

@username1478
Ah, we can't all sit up on that high horse and expect everyone to entertain your opinion without question, can we? However I was rather silly to allow myself to be drawn into replying several times to someone who just wanted to shout people down whilst also being irrelevant and obnoxious. My bad, thanks for the reminder. I'll take it into account going forwards. Still, hope that tattoo serves you well, it's your skin after all. Off I pop, I doubt there's more to be said. Deaf ears and all that. Peace out hun Grin

FrothyCothy · 30/10/2024 00:37

Anyway…

what did you decide to do @LieutenantJumboJr ?

LieutenantJumboJr · 19/11/2024 16:10

Beautiful! Remember you can always go for touch ups in future if needed.
