I don't have any tattoos but I want one. Is the arm a good place?

I am interested in getting a tattoo. I am interested in a colour tattoo. I adore my favourite colour so so so so so much. I am interested in getting a rose or a sunflower or a butterfly.

I am thinking about the inside of my forearm as a location.

I am also apprehensive in case I get judged on it in the future and in relation to work stuff too, just in case it goes against me in the future.

What do you guys think?

I am leaning towards a butterfly in my favourite colour because butterflies are so beautiful and delicate. However I love roses and sunflowers too. I think I would love a rose too.

I just can't decide. I won't get it til the spring so there's plenty of time to decide.

If its just because of the colour that you want to get at tattoo I don't think it's a good idea , even if that tattoo artist can match your desired colour perfectly ( which is unlikely) your skin colour will change the ink colour and it will fade and change colour over the years. Red , blue & purple fade particularly quickly.

I have tattoos and plan on getting more and tho obviously the colour is important the design is what you should love.

I agree with this. In addition to the design also consider what it means to you. I have just the one tattoo (on my shoulder) and it was designed by someone very special to me, to mark a significant event in my life.

As for positioning etc, some negative attitudes go with the territory. From those that see mine, particularly from those l have known a while and didn’t know about it, it is very much a “who would have thought it” type response.

I like tattoos, that's not always a popular opinion on mn.
It sounds like you've given it some thought and you have until spring to find the design you'd love.
Make it early spring so it's fully healed by the time the weather improves, they're not very pretty when healing.
I'm late 50's and have several tattoos, including a half sleeve which also covers my hand, one on my chest and a huge one over my shoulder, one behind my ear which goes down the side of my neck.
I have a "good" job, they've never affected my prospects.
On the one occasion that someone negatively commented I replied with "its inappropriate to comment on a woman's appearance"
That shut that shit down 😀

If you can cover it for work that's fine., keep in mind all weathers. There are some jobs that require them covered all the time so be mindful of that if you intend to work in that sort of industry.

We went to Butlins once and I wondered why so many of the young staff wore tubi grips up their arms and on their calves, and then cottoned on that they weren't terribly clumsy but obviously had full sleeve tattoos.

I thought about this and I really do want a tattoo. I want a design that's delicate like a butterfly or a flower. I like the idea of a flower because of the word 'bloom'. I think I would love a rose in my favourite colour. My favourite colour is also the colour that represents my favourite day and awareness campaign. I want a delicate flower that blooms in my favourite colour.

Tattoos are increasingly mainstream, outside of conservative fields and public-facing service jobs. It is, however, sensible to start with tattoos you can cover fairly easily should you need to. Face and neck tattoos can certainly be work-limiting. Forearm should be fine in most fields of work, but I'd consider whether you are willing to wear long sleeves or a coverup should you need to. I have an inside forearm tattoo. It's neither a very fleshy or very bony place so it's not one of the most painful places to start and isn't too vulnerable to being stretched if you gain weight.

I would also heed people's warnings on the colour and how important it is to you that your tattoo is a specific colour, because colour is vulnerable and will definitely change over time.

Gabbyghoul · 29/10/2024 09:49

Arm is definitely the least painful place.

I have about 30 tattoos, never affected my professional life. Our CEO has a full sleeve.

RevelryMum · 29/10/2024 10:02

I have two tattoos a lot of thought went into them I got them in my early 20's now 37 and I regret both wish I never got them tbh

Rocknrollstar · 29/10/2024 10:16

Think about whether you really want the tattoo to be visible. On your arm it will be visible whenever you wear short sleeves/ no sleeves. You might want it now but may not want it in years to come. It might be better to place it somewhere more private.

Also avoid tummy (especially if you are planning to get pregnant in the future) and boobs. Both stretch with age.

I hate tattoos, I think they look dreadful.

However, my ad I w would be to spend as much time on researching for an 'artist' as you are looking for the actual design.

You will pay a lot of money for one of well known tattoo practitioners but as it's permanently displayed on your flesh, you want it to be of the highest quality.

Personally I would buy a pack of those wash off transfers.

As the owner of one small tattoo, I’m a little puzzled as to why someone who hates tattoos is posting on a Tattoo Forum.

lt’s also worth remembering that Judy Dench and the late Winston Churchill’ wife both have/had a tattoo.

Alwaystired94 · 29/10/2024 14:28

For a first tattoo, arm is probably one of the better starter placements.

But make sure you do your research on the artist, what styles they specialise in etc. Too many bad tattoo artists out there, make sure you heavily research!

Shootingstars999 · 29/10/2024 14:42

My colleague has tattoos on the inside of her arm, so not as noticeable if they were on the outside.
Go for it!!

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 29/10/2024 15:29

My back is tattooed (big tattoo, not little at all) and I absolutely love it, even though I can only see it in the mirror.

It's been there for decades and I've never regretted it.

It's a freehand custom design that is personal to me and most people I meet would never suspect I have a tattoo at all.
I apparently 'don't look the type'.
Unless I wear a backless dress, you can't see it.

I still love it, but honestly, I'd hate it being visible now.
What looked amazing on my younger skin doesn't look so great on saggy old lady skin.

Tattoos are forever, so you'll have wrinkly old skin one day.

Honestly, if you are thinking of just getting a little one, I'd leave it.

Most of the women I've met with one small tattoo somewhere grew to hate it over the years and really regret it, even though they were convinced at the time.
It's often a rose or a butterfly.

They were people who loved the idea of a tattoo/being someone with a tattoo more than the actual artwork they were putting on their bodies.

If you do get one, make sure it's somewhere you can choose to show or not show.
That way, if you come to regret it, at least everyone can't see it.

Also bear in mind that most of the regular types of ink mean that black tattoos turn green/blue with age (some more recent ink types apparently don't do that so much, but they haven't been around for 20+ years to know for sure) and that the other colours do fade/break down a little over time so that details become muddy.
Whites can yellow so please don't get those.
If there are fine details they may disappear over time or look a little smudged.

A search on Amazon for temporary rose tattoo brings up 50,000 results so you should be able to find something close to what you are looking for at a cost of less than a tenner.
You can try one out and see if you really love it so much you are prepared to still have it when you are collecting your pension.
