Is this too ‘common’?

Basically I’m having a cover up tattoo done next week.
Its to go over a bad barcode tattoo I had done when I was around 18 🫣
obviously I’m limited to what I can have to cover it because it’s so dark & I’ve found this butterfly with flowers that my tattooist said will work.
Im just wondering are butterflies really common? I like to be a bit different but also want something pretty!

Do tattoos need to have meaning?

Not really Grin

I have 3 stars on my wrist…no meaning. Just wanted the stars.

I also have paw prints on my hip. They do have meaning. They were made for my cat who I had at the time. Now it’s just paw prints.

Butterflies are incredibly common. But do you care? I mean that's just tattoos. Anything cool and edgy invariably becomes common really quickly.

At least you know yours is. They're common because they have nice symbolic and aesthetic qualities.

Definitely this. Just relax and go with it if you like it.

I haven’t actually seen anyone in real life with this kinda thing done so yeah thanks for pointing out that it has gained in popularity. I’m not a follower in any sense so don’t want something everyone else has iyswim but at the same time I guess it can be amended a bit so it’s more unique

I had a butterfly on my stomach aged 16 almost thirty years ago. It’s not new, they are common, but there’s a reason for that (ie they are pretty to look at). If you like it, get it.

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 02/05/2023 23:19

Is there anything that has more meaning to you that could be adapted?

I think the design is pretty, but if you have doubts, it's not the right design for you. It will be on your body for a long time if not forever so you need to love it rather than settling or picking a "best option".

Unless you're in a massive rush , I'd say settle down for a bit, do some research, have a look at various things that you like and then have a discussion on what will work and any adaptations needed with your tattoo artist.

Even if it is, I don't think it matters at all. You could, if you wanted, personalise it with your favourite flowers and colours.

So glad I went with this one. Totally in love 😍

I have a very similar one on my knee

QuentininQuarantino · 13/05/2023 19:38

It is very pretty, but I do think it might run the risk of being dated to this era, just on the amount of butterflies and flowers being done at the moment (I have some flowers and I don’t care!) Like the armband tattoos and Chinese symbols are very 90s, for example.

QuentininQuarantino · 13/05/2023 19:38

Ah i posted before seeing it. Yours is stunning 😍Op

I did speak to the tattoo artist about it and she drew up the design with the birth flowers but it just didn’t flow iyswim. Their birth flowers are lavender, water lily and white rose

It's lovely. 🦋

Some tattoos are common because they simply look good - and the primary function of a tattoo is too look good :)

your tattoo looks lovely :)

nicericey · 17/05/2023 08:25

Much nicer than a barcode. You may see people with similar but who cares.

UnderPressure89 · 17/05/2023 08:32

I’m a bit confused sorry, maybe because I don’t have tattoos. But if you’re having a tattoo to cover up an unwanted one, isn’t it just better to have the original removed?

Painful and expensive I’m sure, but surely better than chucking more ink on unwanted ink?

Craftycorvid · 17/05/2023 08:34

That’s really pretty!

that depends on what the tattoo is (not every tattoo can be fully removed) and if it's worth the pain. If you want to have a tattoo, just not the original design, then it's better to cover

Ah ok. Tattoo removal has probably come a long way in the last few years but it is probably bloody hard to do. Particularly an all black barcode…..

If someone still wants a tattoo in that spot then it's easier to cover

black is the easiest ink to remove though. yellow and green apparently are the worst
