Felt ashamed I should be getting a tattoo

So I am 50 years old. When I was 42 I was involved in a RTA. Part of my left forearm is badly scarred. I have finally plucked up courage to have a tattoo. I want a pretty leaf tattoo. My family think it is a good idea. However, I told one of my colleagues and she looked shocked (she is covered in tattoos and in her 20s) and just said ‘you getting a tattoo’ followed by ‘just get a small one’. After this I felt deflated. I just can’t understand her reaction. After all one day she will be 50. Any positive opinions please?

She’s a knob. And a weirdly hypocritical one as well. I can only assume she doesn’t think you’re the ‘type’ to get a tattoo and was a bit shocked? Anyway, get the tattoo op. And you need to show us a pic for evidence :)

I would have asked what was so shocking! She’s probably jealous of you and insecure. Nowt wrong with getting a tattoo at any age. Does she not realise she will still have tattoos in her 50s and beyond. Silly woman. She would have a fit if she saw me !

Ah forget about her. She probably thinks she is cool and alternative, but as you say she will be older herself too one day.

She wants to be super dooper edgy and cool and special. If 50 yo women get them, she's pedestrian and the same as everyone else.

She'll grow and learn and become an older woman herself and cringe.

Make sure to rub it in her face and discuss internalised sexism and how ageism affects women a LOT around her.

she is weirdly critical. I am a mother of 2 grown up boys and 1 daughter. Not one bit old fashioned. Like to go out drinking and clubbing (occasionally) in Leeds where I live. And yes I will post you a pic. Feeling better already.

Loads of people get tattoos to cover scars. Send her a link to breast cancer survivors (mainly over 50) who have had to have a mastectomy and got tattoos to cover the scars. Tell her to educate herself…

I’m in my 20’s (holding on!!! Just) and I have a half sleeve arm tattoo and multiple smaller ones. In a professional job and I’m a mum.

My mum didn’t get her first tattoo until she was 46, now 57 this year I think she has 6. Enjoy designing your tattoo and bring a can of cola along on the day, enjoy and update us with pics!
