Tattoo aftercare - palmers cocoa butter or fresh jar of coconut oil?

Looking for advice please. First tattoo today & was advised to use palmers, I think it has petroleum jelly in it and I prefer to not use that so I was wondering if culinary coconut oil could be used instead? I’ve found an unused jar in the kitchen cupboard. Would save a trip to the shops too. I would love to hear any aftercare tips as it’s my first tattoo and I don’t want to mess it up!

I have lots of tattoos, and a couple of them I’ve used coconut oil and they have been fine.

I would always double check with your tattooist though.

Twitatwo · 09/12/2022 17:47

Also, what did you get?!

Thanks for replying Twitatwo, I’ll message the tattooist about the coconut oil just to be on the safe side. Here’s a bit of the tattoo 😁

Pretty tattoo! Yes, my tattooist advised coconut oil and it worked brilliantly.

curiousbanana · 09/12/2022 20:47

I only ever use hustle butter, best thing ever.

Twitatwo · 09/12/2022 20:50

Ohh pretty!

Bepanthen nappy cream, savlon, the tattoo artist may give you their own preparation or recommend something. The main thing is LEAVE IT THE FUCK ALONE for about a week. It'll look gloopy but definitely no touching.

Have you got plastic film or cling on it?

Palmers is safe and fine ice lots of tattoos failing that stories ink are fab and butterluxe look those two up

Bepanthen is discouraged now as is covering it after the first few hours.

All depends on aftercare your tattooist has given usually after few hours it's to wash it gently and pat dry it never rub it then after 24 hrs to start with the cream to keep it from drying out and to wash first thing in morning followed by cream and then again before bedtime.
Follow that until the scabs have finally gone usually one-two weeks depending on individuals healing time.

I defiantly suggest stories and ink they have fab information regarding tattoo aftercare as well as products.
I use a lot of their products on my healed tattoos to
Keep them looking great and healthy.

Butterluxe is another one love the balm and the foam soaps for the caring part of fresh tattoos mine have all healed fine with no issues using butterluxe.

DD has had several tattoos and always uses coconut oil.

Tattoo artist here 😊 I always recommend palmers or unscented aveeno to my customers as you can buy them quite easily from a supermarket.

There are also a lot of creams out there specifically for tattoos but if you order them may take a few days to arrive.

In the meantime Coconut oil can work well but it can ruin your clothes so wear some pyjamas tonight you don't mind getting oily.
Beautiful tattoo 😊

catsonahottinroof · 09/12/2022 21:16

Aveeno baby cream is meant to be good. Wash with unscented soap and then put just a thin layer of cream on, not too often. Sometimes just wash with no cream.

Mine was some time ago but I used sudocrem, worked a treat.

Jackster22 · 09/12/2022 21:33

Hiya I have loads of tattoos, always use palmers cocoa butter but only the fragrance free one 👍🏻

massivecringe · 09/12/2022 21:37

I've used Palmers and it's been fine

mrsdolittle · 09/12/2022 21:42

Palmers here too (normal not unscented). No problems at all. But my tattooist did say not to use anything at all for a few days - to let it dry out a bit I think.

Thankyou all!
