Tattoo gone wrong - what should I do?

I haven't used real names for this.

About 6 weeks ago I paid £150 for a Japanese fighting fish tattoo to cover an old butterfly tattoo I had done when I was 18.

When I got home and had a good look at the tattoo, I noticed that the fins and gills were missing and a lot of detail was missed in the tail. It looked nothing like the picture I had sent in advance, and I could still clearly see the butterfly underneath as the colour of the new tattoo was done in pastel shades, which is not what I had asked for.

Whilst tattooing, the Leo was telling me that he hadn’t smoked his joint this morning and that it had made him feel on edge, which in turn made me start to feel uneasy. He spoke about his steroid use and about how agitated he can get, but he thought it was worth it as it gave him a good physique. He also bragged about how much money he was making but that he hated tattooing and would be happy if he never had to do another tattoo again. This all made me feel uncomfortable, but at this point he was halfway through the tattoo.

Once it was finished, he let me have a quick look and from what I could see I was happy at the time, but it was very rushed and he was starting to wrap it in clingfilm before I got the chance to have a good look. At this point his next client was waiting so I appreciated that he probably just felt rushed.

When I got home and had a proper look I immediately wasn’t happy with the work. I sent Leo a message explaining this and that I felt the tattoo wasn’t complete. He said he could fix it in about 2 weeks’ time, and I agreed but didn’t confirm a date.

A few days later I was in town when I passed a tattoo shop. I decided to call in and get some advice. They said that the tattoo would need about 6 weeks to heal before an attempt to fix it should be made. They advised me that if I wanted them to put it right it would cost around £140. They also gave me advice to speak to the owner of shop Leo worked at to complain about his work. After having some time to reflect on my appointment I realised that I wasn’t comfortable having Leo rectify the mistakes, after all, he had caused them, and so I put all the information into a message and sent it to the owner of the shop – his boss.

She apologised and said she had seen the messages and was mortified by his work. She said she would fix it for me, free of charge in about 6 weeks’ time, when I came off my holiday. I asked if she could confirm a date during a period of annual leave that I have and she did not respond. I asked her again a few days later and she said she would get back to me that evening. She didn’t. I also haven’t heard anything from Leo in the past 6 weeks to check on how it’s going.

I have since come off my holiday and have requested an appointment my annual leave. I can only get it done during leave as I work the same hours as the tattoo shop, and they don’t do evenings or weekends. She has got back to me today and has said that she is fully booked, but she can book me in with Leo instead. I explained to her again the reason I didn’t want to see him and she hasn’t got back to me. At this point what should I do? I don’t think I want to go back to this studio at all. Should I request a refund, what would be the best way to go about this and has anyone else been through something similar?

I would point out to her that as she was mortified by Leo's work you either will accept a full refund of the price originally paid or one of her appointments can see Leo as you want her to sort his shoddy work out.

Yup this. Don't let Leo touch you again.

I'd make an appointment at a different place and leave Leo's place a bad review.

I might ask for a refund but would be prepared to not receive one and just draw a line under it as an unfortunate experience.

No2incoming · 04/08/2022 18:20

I would tell her to make time for you to fix this otherwise you will put the pictures online for people to judge themselves and see who can help fix it

Not all artists are good at cover ups. Research is very essential. Consider hitting it with a laser a couple of times to lighten it, then your options for new work increase significantly. Refund is very unlikely and it'd be a waste of energy to chase it.

autocollantes · 04/08/2022 19:11

I'd be tempted to leave a review detailing what happened and include the image you sent in and what you actually got.

And definitely don't let Leo touch it.

Branleuse · 04/08/2022 19:19

This is bizarre. Didnt you see what he waa doing while he was doing it? Did you not see pics of his previous work??

sleepyhoglet · 04/08/2022 20:43

Are you brave enough to go into the shop and talk to the owner directly?

The tattoo is on my back so I couldn't see it no. His previous work on the website looks great although I had originally asked for the owner to do but she had no availability for months and recommended Leo.

I have sent another message to the shop and have said that if the owner cannot rectify during the week we initially agreed on then I would like a refund please.

I am not the most confident person so I would rather not call into the shop to sort out, however I work full time and it's half an hour away so it's not really convenient. I was on the phone to my friend earlier who has suggested I look into making a claim through a small claims court, but I hope we don't get to that point.

Tbh I’d just cut your losses, let it heal and go to another studio - have a thorough read of reviews and look through their portfolio. Any artist worth their salt take the quality of their work very seriously, and certainly wouldn’t be coming out with the statements this person did. The studio as a whole seems pretty unprofessional.

ShaneTwane · 04/09/2022 15:40

At this point i would be demanding my money back and going to a different studio entirely op. Are you willing to show a picture in here so people can see what you mean and how best to fix it?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/09/2022 15:43

I'd want the full cost of laser removal and wait as long as possible to get the best results from it - so the money in advance, rather than hope she'd honour the deal at a later date.

Duchess379 · 04/09/2022 16:10

Do not, under any circumstances let Leo near your tattoo! Go to the 2nd tattooist & let them fix it & chase a refund from the first place. Good luck

Lindy2 · 04/09/2022 16:18

I would possibly threaten to take it to the small claims court.

Cost of original work, cost of rectifying at a better tattoo salon, expenses such as travel, time off work etc could make the total claim worthwhile. I'm not sure if small claims pay out compensation for emotional distress or not.

I'd give her a deadline date to have the remedial work completed by, free of charge. If that is not done then you will proceed with the small claims court action and will document what has occurred in your online reviews.

xxcatcatcatxx · 04/09/2022 16:31

Please do not do any of the above. You need to go back and speak to Leo directly. Don’t let anyone else touch it, complain or write any letters just yet. You probably won’t get a refund yet as either he hasn’t even had a chance to fix it, look at it or even see how it’s healed/ healing.

He sounds like an absolute buffoon but have to be brave on this one and go to him directly first and explain all this. People run off all the time to other artists and demand refunds and before they even go back to the original artist it’s really frustrating.

Good Luck, let us know how it goes💕 xxx
