Risks of piercings

Can any piercers please tell me if there are any big risks to septum and tragus piercings please?

Not things like infection, bumps, hypertrophic scarring etc, by ‘big risks’ I mean things like hitting major arteries, paralysis etc?

I’ve already pierced my ear lobes, my nostril and my helix and I’d like to do a tragus and septum but if there’s a risk of something really major going wrong like a big bleed, nerve damage, that sort of thing I obviously won’t!

Pierced myself I should clarify.
If there’s big risks to septum and tragus I’ll still get them done but by a professional rather than myself

Erm. Why the f* would you do it yourself?

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 31/01/2022 17:04

Not sure there are any major arteries in your ear or nose?

Tsuni · 31/01/2022 17:06

Fgs Get a professional to do it.

What a lovely helpful response.. Hmm

I did my (multiple) ear lobes, helix and nostril myself because I wanted to and they all look lovely and have healed up fine with zero issue.

I fancy a tragus and a septum.
I’d like to do them myself if it’s safe.

I think you need a professional if you think you'll end up paralysed or hitting a major artery

WetRainbowRoses · 31/01/2022 17:09

I wouldn’t have thought so either but I hoped a piercer or anyone else with medical knowledge would be able to let me know.

Unfortunately judging by what I’ve read so far that was naive and it looks like I’m just going to be told to go to a professional which I don’t want to do unless I have to.

Just to be clear, the septum/tragus of your nose/ear? Not the ones of your neck/spinal cord?

The former should be fine

Oh look, more helpful responses Hmm

I have 14 piercings in currently done by myself and I haven’t died nor got an infection or anything else horrible.
I’m quite confident in my ability but surprisingly enough, given I’m not a professional piercer or doctor or anything medical, I actually don’t have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the placement of veins, arteries, nerves etc in all the different locations of the human body hence why I asked if there was anything I needed to be aware of.

How naive of me to think people might actually manage to answer a question politely.

Well, as my mum used to say, ask a silly question...

That’s why there are professional piercers.

Thing with anatomy, not everyone’s is the same. So while you can say there shouldn’t be a nerve, artery or whatever in such and such place, some people will.

You need to physically look at the anatomy, and know what you are looking for, to be able to say whether there’s a risk or not.

Esssa · 31/01/2022 17:24

Apparently there's a small sweet spot for the septum which if you miss can cause collapsed cartilage in your nose. No idea how easy it is to find. Also super easy to pierce wonky and it's obvious because it's in the middle of your face.

WetRainbowRoses · 31/01/2022 17:25

It isn’t a silly question and even if you believed it to be, that still doesn’t give anyone the right to be so rude.

I’d be very interested to see if you are all such rude utter bitches out and about or do you just feel you can behave that way with the anonymity conveniently provided online

I have my own perfectly valid reasons for opting to do it myself and not wanting to visit a professional unless unavoidable.

I have already done multiple piercings myself and was literally just asking if there was anything that I needed to be aware of that could potentially go wrong associated with those particular piercings.

First and last time on this lovely, supportive, knowledgeable board Hmm

Apologies to @Nomoreusernames1244 @Esssa
Thank you for actually answering my question.

If you came to me IRL and asked that question, i’d reply with exactly the same phrase. Because quite frankly, it’s a ridiculous notion and requires an incredulous response.

For £35, have it done by someone with a clue. Or, get advice from randoms on MN and do it yourself, why not?! Grin

I will echo what others have said and advise seeking out a professional. I'd personally have doubts about how sterile an environment you can create without an autoclave and qualifications in blood borne pathogens.

However, to answer your question, there is unlikely to be any significant vasculature or nervous tissue in the septum and tragus and they are generally relatively straightforward piercing. I still wouldn't risk it myself though as I know I certainly wouldn't be able to get placement and jewellery size etc correct, even if I could source the appropriate needles 🤷🏻‍♀️
