I’ve had my ears pierced for more than 20 years!
But when I take earrings out, the holes start closing up within days.

I usually have stainless steel studs in 24/7 with no issues but I’ve just bought myself a lovely pair of dangling sterling silver earrings.
Because they are dangly and delicate I can’t really leave them in while sleeping, showering etc like my studs as they are likely to get damaged.

Here lies the problem, the silver earrings are absolutely fine once in.
I can wear them all day and don’t feel them, there’s no redness, pain etc.

But putting them in and out produces a sharp pain.
Putting them in the morning there is slight resistance and taking them out there is a tiny amount of crust.

Does anyone know what is happening here?

Not sure but Iv heard some people can be allergic to silver

I also can’t wear any earrings apart from stainless steel, surgical steel or white gold. Anything else just irritates the piercing holes. I believe that it’s to do with the nickel that is present in the posts.

I've developed a problem with some earrings in my 30s. Similarly, my holes which never closed after even months of no earrings, have started healing if I take my earrings out. Either I've developed an allergy which has aggravated the piercing or mother nature is telling me to reject my piercings and buy a twinset and pearls.

My skin in general has become more sensitive as I age. I find soaps I could tolerate before have caused my skin to become sore, dry and cracked.

I have wondered about allergy but it seems strange that they are fine once in?
It’s literally just the putting in and taking out which is painful.

I’ve just pulled them in and out a bit now and again, it produces the pain and the one side had a bit of dried crusty gunk.

Quite depressing as I really love my new earrings, not massively excited about going back to my boring studs 24/7...

I’m considering maybe taking the dangly bit off the fishhooks of my new earrings and trying to attach them to the bottom of my old studs somehow but if it doesn’t work then I’ll have ruined my nice new earrings!

It’s so frustrating, I have a nickel allergy so I do have to be careful.
I got a horrendous allergic reaction to my engagement ring once (white gold) as unbeknownst to me it contained nickel.
But pretty much all of my jewellery that I wear daily is sterling silver.

Ugh, I have opened the ring at the top and slid the dangly bit out and popped it through my stud so my nice, non painful stainless steel is through my ear and the silver is just on the outside.

I am still able to reattach it and close up the loop so I can wear it as a painful dangly earring.

It’s just not the same 😭
The charm on the stud instead of the fish hook looks frumpy and wrong.
It loses all the elegance.

Pictures attached.
It’s bloody horrible isn’t it?

You can buy some surgical steel ear piercing hooks and then make/buy your own things to put on them? That might help you get a wider variation on what you can wear instead of studs?

MellowMelly · 17/10/2020 13:54

Nice earrings, but no, it doesn’t look the same as that’s not what you wanted them to look like when you bought them

I’ll get some and see what happens!

I've never tried this myself but I know someone that was allergic to a certain type of metal (I can't remember what) but she used to put some clear nail varnish over the piece of jewellery, then obviously let it dry lol and then it wouldn't affect her skin!
As said above I don't know how safe/effective this is as I've never tried but thought I'd pass it on just incase!

Also maybe it's sore when you put those earrings in as your holes have already started to close up hence why you have a bit off crust there? X
