Fleece liners for guinea pigs

Hello, I was thinking of getting fleece liners for our c&c cage to use instead of wood shavings. Can anyone recommend a brand? They seem quite expensive for the initial outlay but I’ve just calculated how much we’re spending on shavings so maybe we’d actually save money in the long run!

I bought washable incontinence pads off Amazon, and cover with old towels. Works a treat.

i used to buy fleece by the metre and cut to size with pinking sheers and place over old towels for them at night but during the day they were outside (secure and safe) or indoors in a pen with Aubiose bedding. Never used wood shaving.

I have bought the kavee ones and then also a set from an online group of Facebook who are well reccomended.
I have to say the kavee fleeces are far superior and worth every penny. I paid £90 for 2 and I wash them probably 2/3 times a week. If you think how much the cost of wood shavings is now then it seems cost effective in the long run.

I use fleece for my indoor piggies and it's fab. I bought my initial liners from a seller on etsy (can't remember which). I've also bought washable waterproof pads from amazon (dark blue and lightly quilted) but I find these are too thin except as an under layer.

I recently changed the layout of my boy's house to a non- standard size. I cut up one of the old etsy liners and discovered it was made of 2 layers of fleece with a towel inbetween so I sewed some custom ones using fleece blankets from ikea and old towels.

If you're handy with a sewing machine that's a good option - I'm really pleased with mine!

We use Kavee but I brought second hand and I have some smaller fleece pad which I brought from Etsy that I placed in per spots. Bath mats are also really good.

We bought something like this Absorbent Cage Liner for C&C and Ferplast, Guinea Pigs And Small Animals : Amazon.co.uk: Handmade Products and 4 years later they are still going strong.
We wash each fleece weekly, but also have a bathmat in the kitchen area which is washed twice weekly.

Also, fleece is way less messy than other options and makes cleaning out so easy!

If you use fleece I totally recommend getting an animal bedding washing bag (I got one from amazon, other sellers are available 😀) it's a big zip up bag that stops any hair, hay etc from invading your washing machine!

I used pillowcases.

We just had some cheap fleece blankets from IKEA cut into pieces.

Thanks all, this is really helpful. I might do a mix of diy and kavee or similar. We have plenty of old fleece blankets about and I do have a sewing machine. The piggies hopefully won’t notice my lack of skill!

we use Len toddler bed waterproof mattress protectors from ikea. The smooth ones- they work great as the hay doesn’t stick on ( like it does to fleece) we bought ours for my DCs bed when they moved out of their cot 10 years ago and the GPs have had them for 5 years. Still going strong!

AwkwardPaws27 · 15/10/2025 16:09

The proper liners with Zorb inners do last a lot longer between washes - I had two sets from JPS Pets & only washed every 7-10days (two sows). The outer fleece layers stayed completely dry due to the wicking effect of the zorb.
I previously tried DIYing with towels, bathmats, fleece etc but if you put pressure on those layers you could feel the dampness so they need to be changed frequently to prevent bumblefoot etc.

Just another mention of aubiose. I don't like shavings but aubiose is fab, despite looking like shavings!
