Guinea pig body shape?

marshmallowfinder · 31/08/2025 15:43

I've taken on an older female piggy around 2 months ago, and she has quite a dipped back, large rounded backside and flabby sides to her abdomen. She's perfectly well and content, but it just occurred to me that she could be this shape due to previous pregnancy/ies? Does anyone know if sows do tend to look like this after earlier pregnancies? Thank you in advance!

Could be ovarian cysts?

Stoptakingmysellotape · 02/09/2025 15:35

Without examining her I don't think we can help with this. Female piggies can commonly get ovarian cysts and obviously you don't know her veterinary history. Has she had a vet check? If not I'd suggest that as a precaution when taking on any new piggy with unknown background (I'm an animal welfare professional who rescues guinea pigs).

marshmallowfinder · 02/09/2025 15:51

Thanks for that I'll try to take a photo of her later on. She hasn't had a vet check but I hope to do that when I take my other piggy in soon. She's really bright and well in herself fortunately.

Is she a smooth haired? I found our female smooths (and my DD male smooth come to think of it ) were porkier than the long haired/teddy/rex/abby

I did read that a female piggie who has had a litter is less likely to get cysts .
Two of our girls had been breeders .(one developed a cyst ) Two hadn't .(one developed a tumour)

Maybe in rescue she had less space to move about . Hopefully now with you she can exercise more .
Worth a Vet check though to give her a once over .

Are you sure the chubbiness isn't pregnancy...................Wink

We've got one pig that has had a litter. You can't see what shape she is as she has crazy hair, but her sides do feel a bit flabby, like she's been bigger and has lost weight.

BollyKnickerz · 05/09/2025 00:06

They're very awkward shapes (big round bums) skinnier sides, some can have a long neck when stretched out. I think it sounds normal to me. (Proud piggy owner 😌)

I was looking at a website for a Petting Zoo type of place they had some very informative info about guinea-pigs .
Specifically their diet and they are social so need a group of them .

But they said they weight 0.5kg ..............!
My littlest girl weighed in at 1066g ( like the Battle of Hastings )

If any of my adults got down to 500g they'd have starved to death !

Our largest piggie was a hefty 1.4kg at a year old when he went for his castration. The vet was very impressed . Piggie was solid muscle in his prime .

0.5kg is tiny! All my guineapigs were around 1kg, give or take.

I know ! I was wondering Are they thinking of hamsters ? Grin

How old is she? How much does she weigh? A picture would be helpful.

One of my piggies got down to about 500g when he was 8 years old. He seemed okay though and had regular vet checks. One day he just died of old age. He'd had a very healthy life and had been a bit over 1kg his whole life, till age took over. I'd had him since birth. He was a hefty baby at birth.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/09/2025 00:49

It is a really good habit to weigh them ( my DH did a spread sheet ) we used a kitchen scale and a plastic bowl to put them in.

Then he'd go " she's lost 10g" which was a cue for the piggie to eat more supper .
They didn't like being told they were getting tubby How fat can we get on vegetables ? Shock

marshmallowfinder · 06/09/2025 14:35

Thanks everyone! She's about 4 and weighs 1.22kg. She's the black and white Teddy in the photos. They don't show her figure too well unfortunately as she's sooo difficult to photograph as she doesn't stay still for a second! I really have no concerns about her health from her appetite and demeanor but I'm just more curious if people might know if this is what commonly can happen post pregnancy. We will have a check at the vets soon though, just to be sure.

I know that my vet would tell me that is overweight for a piggie. You said she hasn't had a vet check. You have concerns. I would start with a vet check with a vet that knows guinea pigs.

4 is cavy middle age (but don't tell her I said so)
The bit between the thin white stripe and the fawn area - is that her upper thigh or a bump ?

Our Teddy boar was smaller than our Rex boar
The fact she's had piglets and probably lost some muscle tone would change her shape .
It looks like they're eating and poohing well though Smile

Stoptakingmysellotape · 08/09/2025 06:39

1.22 is big for a guinea pig I think she probably needs to slim down if healthy and not pregnant. Have her vet checked and then I'd be putting her on a diet aimed at helping her shed some weight. Mine are all around 1kg except for my fatty who needs to lose weight at 1.1

That bit is her thigh with a flabby bit which has squidged there due to her crouching position.

I've had five piggies and three of them (over the years, not all at once!) had ovarian cysts. As PP said, vets. Looking at the photo on the left, it could by ovarian cysts by her body shape, but it's v hard to tell without a quick feel. Good luck OP.
