Does your spider recognise you and lets you pick it up after a while? random question I know, but i’ve always wondered. I’d love to get a tarantula, but wouldn’t want it to be upset about me picking it up.

Ive had a tarantula in the past. No, they don’t recognise you, and they don’t care about you one iota. You can get them used to being handled, but no matter how familiar they are with handling, there is no guarantee that they won’t bite (or fire hairs at you, which can be worse) because something has scared them.

I don't think Tarantulas like being pets. They're not really suited to it.

I have 17 and only one tarantula recognises me and climbs onto my hand.

Yes absolutely , you could itch for about 2 weeks and I wear gloves and a mask just to change water , you don't know it's happening and then all of a sudden intense itching of arms usually.

ChilliChoco · 05/09/2025 00:08

Why would you have a tarantula? What is the actual point?

Poodlelove · 05/09/2025 00:38

Especially interesting when building intricate webbing and shedding their skin. Some are stunning and are always out on display.

PickledMuffin · 06/09/2025 12:37

@Poodlelove one actually recognises you! that’s amazing to hear 🤩

My best friend in my late teens had a tarantula and i always had her when he went on holidays. She was super sweet and liked being picked up and she definitely recognised people. She always seemed sad when she first came to my place and was hiding a lot not moving around. I would take her out a lot and after a few days she would warm up to me and come out right away when i opened the terrarium.
She would sit on my desk and watch me do school work or explore my room and when i tapped her terrarium she would come out from under my bed or wherever she was and go back in.
Judging from the other replies this is not the norm though.. i dont know, i only ever met that one.

@LoveMySushi that’s so sweet! Do you know what kind she was? Wonder if it’s a breed thing?
