New Guinea Pig has stopped eating

We got our two boars last week and they are about 10 weeks old. One is a lot bigger and more dominant than the smaller one.

Smaller GP is docile and has seemed more nervous around us. He has been gaining confidence and has been eating vegetables from our hand.

When I came home today he was very withdrawn and is refusing to eat anything.

I’ve taken him out and checked him over and no sign of injury but he feels very skinny. I’ve syringe fed him some pellets mixed with water and he’s had about 4ml of that. I’ve pushed a piece of red pepper under his nose in the hope he would eat that but he’s refused it.

Big boar is still bounding around the cage as normal and doesn’t seem bothered by little boars lack of energy.

I’m going to take him to the vet tomorrow if he doesn’t improve. Has anyone else ever experienced this with their guinea pigs and have any recommendations?

Thanks

If you are in the Hampshire/Dorset area I may know of a rescue with individual boars.

Thank you, that’s very kind. I’m the other side of Surrey/Kent borders.

Wrong side of Surrey, but there is a rescue centre in Godalming. Google Furry Potatoes and you'll find it. I know they sometimes have quite young guinea pigs there. Really wishing you the best of luck in finding the right companion for Big Boar xx

Sorry missed your update - but if you come back to the thread - April Lodge are excellent and experts, they may be able to give advice on bonding (they're in Sandwich so they might not rehome as far as you). There are always more boars in rescue than sows so you might get lucky. And, maybe not for right now, but in future maybe consider neutering so he could be mixed with sows as it's a much less dangerous process for a boar than a sow (they need at least six weeks separation after neutering though). We have 'nursed' a few of the rescue boars through neutering and they were then successfully mixed with sow groups.

A very weird AI response. And about 5 months late.

Hmmm yes , the guinea-pig was euthanised in April
And any online seller with a small monkey in the advert is not the sort of vendor I;d want to be looking up TBH .

Indeed. He was my beautiful boar.

“friendly exotic pets” sounds like a grim website.

Did you manage to get a companion for your Guinea Pig, op?

I did. Bonding was a bit of a process but doable. Big boar is living happily with another boar, he’s still quite a bit more dominant but they are getting along well. New boar tolerates him well. A few squabbles here and there.

Ah, good. Sorry you lost your little one, but pleased you have two happy piggies now!
