Rabbit cleaning advice

I have 2 outdoor buns. They've live in an outdoor covered, predator proof enclosure and have a hutch in there for a shelter. In reality they spend very little time in it, most of their time is in the litter tray or snoozing on the ground no matter what the temperature is! Every week I've been dutifully emptying out and disinfecting the hutch but it's a horrible job at this time of year which got me wondering how necessary this is as they never spend any time in it! What do other people do? Before anyone worries they get a spot clean everyday so it's just a once a week big clean. Thanks!

I never really clean the hutch as their litter tray is outside, and they are totally litter trained. They do go in the hutch to sleep and chill sometimes, and I check the straw to make sure its not damp or dirty and and replace and spot clean where necessary.

Thanks! I'll stick to renewing the litter then and just disinfecting the litter tray, will make life much easier!

If there is bedding in the hutch that will still need cleaning weekly. No cleaning out isn't fun but it's what we got to do. If you're using hay or straw in there if it's left for too long it will go mouldy and those mould spores are really toxic for rabbits.

My two have a shed and aviary. They have decided most of the shed is a litter tray so that I spot clean twice a day and the whole set up is cleaned out once a week. Their shed has one hay litter tray which has the hay replaced and spot cleaned daily fully cleaned once a week, the rest of the shed is vet bed and blankets which I replace when it's been toileted on (which is also daily, I have a very busy washing machine). It's dirty work but it's worth it to know they are clean and happy.

They may not appear to be using the hutch but they still need the option of a good snug hide out - especially as the weather gets colder and they get older as they will feel weather more as they age.

I have had bunnies for years and they have lived to very good ages. I only clean out the straw bed if they have used it as a toilet. Other than that I just top it up. I put fresh newspaper down and give them a clean tray regularly but if it was unused then I would leave it. In the Summer mine rarely go in so it rarely needs doing. I would replace the hay for eating and give fresh water regularly.
