Guinea pigs and cats, knock some sense onto me please!

Hi all, looking for some sensible advice please!

I grew up with lots of pets, including guinea pigs, although I haven't had any for a long time now.

We have a cat - he was a rescue we got over ten years ago, he's been our only pet as he was quite the hunter when he was young but nowadays he's 14 and definitely slowed down a bit.

My son is 5 and loves animals and recently has been properly asking for a pet. We go to a local garden centre quite frequently (ideal young kid jaunt out!) and he'll sit for ages talking to the piggies, rabbits, even rats. He's been to events there where he can hold the animals and help clean out the pens and stuff. Obviously I'm fully aware ANY pet we end up getting for the foreseeable future will be a family pet where us adults will be responsible for them and he'd just help. He's a sensitive kid with some struggles, he's kind of an "animals are better than people" kind of soul already.

I'd love to get a pair of piggies because I know where I am with them and could show him how to take good care of them etc. We have space inside for a good sized cage and some outdoor space for them to go in a secure run in the nicer weather. But I just don't know realistically if it would work with the cat.

Practically our house is set up so we could keep them separate fairly easily. There's almost always someone in the house. When we're away the cat goes to a cattery, but my parents would happily pop in and sit with the piggies and make sure they're ok. They'd probably even have them at their house for a bit if we asked.

My heart is saying go for it, but my head isn't so sure! At the moment when he asks we say No and explain it's not the right time but to be honest our resolve is slowly eroding, especially as me and my husband (his dad) are big animal people and would probably have a Noah's Ark if we had the space and money...

Perfectly happy to be told to screw on my sensible head and just hold firm saying no, but if anyone has experience of similar where it's worked out then please share too!

Spam away! Tiny piggies are cute.

However I'd totally forgotten how much they poo !!

Ha Ha they are basically stomachs on legs , it never ceased to amaze me how much they can eat .....and of course it has to come out somewhere . Grin

When we got our GP6 to bond with our two girls , we put him in the big enclosed secure cage inside the Pigshed .
They could walk round to suss him out , (he was castrated but needed a further 4 weeks to be sterile ) my little sow nabbed some dandelion leaves and camped beside his cage . We could see a little pile of her droppings where she slept .

Thought I'd do an update, just because! (Lost my log in info after an emergency phone swap so I've name changed)

Our piggies are doing so well! Both will come and eat out of our hands 😀

Derek is still wary being picked up, but he'll relax and even doze once he's comfy on a lap having a cuddle. Norman will come straight to the cage door wheeking when sit by the cage and will happily be stroked and picked up - although he doesn't like to sit for cuddles, he gets quite restless and likes to explore, popcorn around instead after a little fuss.

My mum is in love with them, every time she comes over she'll bring them a cucumber and give them a fuss! My son adores them and feeding them in the morning and cuddling them in the afternoon is a big part of his before and after school routine. Even my husband (a big animal lover, but wasn't sure about getting them at first, in case it was a bit much) can now often be found chatting to them and giving them lettuce to nibble.

Our cat has gotten used to them and isn't told bothered. We're obviously very careful about keeping him out of the room if they are out, but once in the cage he'll just saunter past to go upstairs.

In short, it's a success and I love them so much! Still can't get over the poo though 🤣

Added pictures because I can't resist!
