What are bearded dragons really like as pets

I already own a tortoise who we all love very much but I've also always loved bearded dragons. I know as babies they eat a ton of bugs which I will admit the idea of bugs was always a turn off and why I put the idea off. But is it really that bad? Are they as docile as they appear to be online or has anyone experienced a fiesty one? Any advice. Tips or things to consider I'll appreciate it. Thanks in advance

We had 2 but 1 is better we found out.. Once you get the temp and lighting right it's easyish.. Lots of veg chopping and crickets... Buy a small pop up pool to let them loose in for feeding time. If you drop them in the viv they escape via the lighting gaps... Ime.
Watching TV in the UK but sounding like on holiday abroad is odd!!
They love to snuggle in and sleep on warm boobs ime!!

This is Marco. Can confirm he loves the boobs (and is quite keen on cosying up between my neck and shoulder).

He belongs to my son really, but all animals know the most useful member of the house ;)

They have massive personalities!

I had 2. Amazing pets! The only downside was when they poo'd on their heat rock. The smell of baked shit is something else! You just need to spot clean regularly.

Mine used to wander the lounge daily and would sit on the windowsill. Our house was on the street (no front garden) and I'd see people do a double take as they passed and stop to look!

He's gorgeous, I'd love that what about the poop I've heard it's really bad. But then who likes poo lol

Lol You've just answered what I asked other poster sounds lovely 😂🤔 My tortoise loves to poo in her water bowl sometimes it's grose but doesn't smell too bad just earthy.
That's so adorable tho sitting on the windowsill my dog walking neighbours might enjoy that lol

They’re sweet! I’ve had two in the past. But I do find them a bit smelly in the house, and a bit of an eyesore which is why we didn’t get another one, we don’t have a really good spot to put them.

but personality wise I would say they are very sweet and docile, they do eat a lot and I didn’t like the idea of crickets or worms etc for them so DH had to feed them but the odd times I did it was fine, and actually really fun to watch! I used to bath my last one, he loved it 🥰

Yeah the poo is stinky and messy, quite wet, but if you grab it when you notice it, it won't have a chance to heat up which is even worse!

We love our dragon. He demands to be let out of his tank so he can sit on the windowsill or on my dd’s shoulder as she’s studying. He is also very fond of pooping on her bed. He’s a friendly fellow who loves munching on dandelions.

Poops on the bed 😂 aw I've got lots of dandelions in my garden that I feed my tortoise so that's fine.

Something to mull over, I'm not rushing into anything but I do love the fact they like to hang out with you. I just have to way up the cost of bugs etc

Yes! Mine would literally sit at the glass door and smack it till you let her out! She had to come out every day.

What would you say the cost is per month for one beardie?

FinallyPregnant23 · 12/08/2024 21:41

I’ve had a couple and they’re lovely, the bugs freaked me out at first but were fine in the end. They really were both very docile. I found them a bit smelly though, and wouldn’t have another for that reason.

WetBandits · 12/08/2024 21:44

We have had several reptiles. As reptiles go, beardies are one of the easiest to care for. We don’t have a beardie anymore since we lost our old girl at around 12, but she was a delight! She loved to go around the house in a dressing gown pocket and sunbathe in her garden run when the weather was nice Smile I miss her a lot. We’ve also had tokay geckos (gorgeous but untameable; we had to wear paintball gloves to feed them or they’d have had our fingers off!) and a Yemen chameleon, who was a seething, beautiful ball of rage, plus an absolute bugger to look after as they need very strict husbandry.

We just have three leopard geckos now, still reasonably easy to look after but nowhere near as friendly as a beardie! Reptile care can be quite taxing, even at the ‘easier’ end of the scale as they are all quite messy and a bit stinky!
