My DD had booked her female rabbit in to be spayed. Before the operation they tested her urine and apparently there was a bit of blood, so they couldn't do the surgery. Instead they charged DD £93 for pain killers (not anti biotics) and told her to wait a few days and get another urine sample. She submitted the second urine sample yesterday and was told the urine was fine, but would need to wait another month before submitting yet another urine sample. Only if that is clear will they reschedule the surgery. So that will be 3 sample kits she will also had to have paid for plus £93 for painkillers.

This sounds really odd to me. Why would they prescribe such expensive pain killers, rather than anti biotics to clear up any infection. Also are further urine samples really necessary? DD feels they're ripping her off but this is our first experience of vets so we might well be wrong.

I had mine spayed and they never tested her urine, didn't think it was a thing tbh

Ridiculous take her elsewhere

Thank you, I wasn't sure what the procedure was. The rabbit was perfectly well and happy before she went in. No symptoms at all, so unsure why they even tested her urine?

Thank you. I did think it all seemed very excessive. My DD is looking for another vets. It's awful if they have scammed her because she's only young and not exactly flush with money, but wants to give her bunny the best care

Rabbits don't respond well to antibiotics. It upsets their gut home to such an extent that it can finish them off.

I did a bit of googling and it seems they do some tests prior, either blood or urine, to make sure animals are healthy and will respond better to anaesthetics. It didn't specify which ones for rabbits though it was all dogs or cats but you can Google yourself later.

The cost you were charged was prob something like £30appointment, £40 to test and read the urine sample, and the rest would be the medication.

Id expect that the rabbit would be fine after the test came back as being clear. So I don't get why they didn't do the Spey then.

PS I'd have been charged another £40 for them to read it when I took the second sample in.

That's Vets For Pets for you. Try and find a vet that's not part of a chain these days though...
