Guinea pigs - C&C cages

Rosebud1302 · 07/01/2024 17:39

Hi all,

I am looking into getting two female guinea pigs and have been looking at the C&C cages.

Firstly, would people recommend these cages or any different types?

Secondly, can you make these cages modular to fit the space you have? So for example if I got enough floor space for a 4x2 could I change the configuration to make it fit my space better?

Thanks all!

C&C is the only guinea pig/rabbit cage design that offers adequate space. Yes totally, configuration doesn't matter provided overall floor space (not levels) remains the same. 1x8 would not be great though!

Our 2 females started in 2x5 c&c which didn't look big enough, but they fitted on an old single bed. After a short while DH built a side extension 2x2 which seemed a lot better.
We are using washable fleeces with a corex 'kitchen' in the side extension.
The area matters more than the shape I think.

You can build your own in any shape or size. Buy the grids and set them up however best fits, then get some correx floor protector (like solid dust sheets) from wicks or B&Q and cut it to fit.

Hey,

I have a c&c cage for my boy Alfie, he's in a 4x2 currently, but was with my 2 other boys in a 5x2 before they passed.

I definitely recommend it, easiest cage I've had(bar set up because that's stressful)
I've had it in a few different set ups, I like that you can easily change the space with more grids. I have added a roof in now, half secure and half able to lift.

Would recommend! Although ditch the connectors and use wire ties instead!

If you need to buy Correx it's the white corrugated plastic sign makers use. You need 4mm.

Go directly to a sign maker, it will be much cheaper. I was quoted anywhere between £15 and £40 for a 2.4m sheet.

We got our C&C cages off amazon just storage solutions not as pet cages.
But then to please DD we bought the base from Kavee in a nice colour and it comes pre cut with the side fixings etc. When we did the extension we used some correx we had in the garage.

We have a C&C cage for ours and I love it. Not only are they fantastic for guinea pigs in terms of space and comfort, they are very practical, easy to clean, and you can make them look really nice as well.

Some great ideas for cage configuration and set ups on here:

or just go onto Pinterest and type 'C and C guinea pig cages' into the search bar and it will bring up loads of photos.

I have C&C for my pigs. Had them years and in various different houses and rooms so they are very adaptable! I have 2 6ft tables for them to sit on, and currently my set up is an L shape with both tables together for a single pen with two pigs in. I use the floor protector sheets from Wickes, they are the same as correx but thinner and cheaper.

I use Aubiose as main bedding. Never tried fleece though.

C&C is also great if for example you accidentally get an extra piggie and need to fence off a section of your pen for a while.

Do you have any other pets? It's quite hard to dog/cat proof it securely.

I had something similar it was 14” square grids from Costco secured with cable ties (clip off the ends and have those outside the cage to save the risk of injury)

I used cardboard layers on the bottom you need a good base layer so they don’t walk on grids. Cardboard with newspaper layers and puppy pads then fleece. I don’t like fleece as a rule but it made a nice soft layer . On my plastic base cage I could put rodent safe wood pellets as it stayed in 😀 . If I got a box to fit snuggly with high enough sides they made a nice hay box

Only used one level ,mine were lazy. When DBro cat visited and the pigs were inside I made a roof from overlapped grid and cable ties and made sure there was a strong box in the run. But it isn’t something I’d want all the time.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/01/2024 18:55

Actually bigger than 14” square . I know they couldn’t reach anywhere near the top even fully stretched so no risk of them climbing out

PuppySnores · 15/01/2024 19:26

One of my childhood guinea pigs (but only one) could climb chain link fencing to a height of a couple of feet. I wonder what he would have made of cube and correx caging?

He fathered rather a lot of offspring, not unrelated to his climbing ability, before my parents made lids for the various garden piggy pens. He also had free range of the garden for several exciting weeks before being recaptured with a small fishing net. For a guinea pig, he was quite the athlete.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/01/2024 20:23

One of ours could run upstairs 🤩 6 steps a small landing then 7 steps. She’d have laughed in the face of a C&C

Sorry I know this is a bit of an old thread, but could you give me some more info on your L shaped set up please?

We're looking at getting a pair of piggies to live in the house. I've kept them before but we're in a different house now so looking at different set up ideas. I'm thinking the best room for them to in, the space would just work with a "straight" cage but if I could make an L shape work they'd have more than enough space!

TeenDivided · 22/07/2024 10:48

@Fivebyfive2 This is ours. It used to be on bedframe with side extension, but DH rebuilt it all recently to fit perfectly.

(You can't see any hay as we were between piggies at the time.)

TeenDivided · 22/07/2024 15:26

You just don't fold up the bit you don't need. We have that base too.

TeenDivided · 22/07/2024 15:43

And the actual caging bit you just don't put in the divider sections. Easy peasy.

Fivebyfive2 · 22/07/2024 15:49

@TeenDivided AHH so the on the base, where the 2 bits meet, you just keep that lip "down" so it's one big bit and not separate? Then obviously leave the dividing cage bit out completely.

Sorry if this sounds like I'm being thick, it's just I've only ever had "straight" ones before 🤣

TeenDivided · 22/07/2024 15:49

C&C caging can be bought from amazon much cheaper than kavee, just count the number of panels, and connectors, and check the mesh will be close enough together.
