I've taken rescue rats and can't stand the smell

I love rats and used to have 9 , I had 6 girls and 3 boys and they never smelt

I've taken 5 rescue girls and everything came with them including an amazing large taller than me "critter nation " cage

All their toys and bowls etc came with them

The first day I left everything as is as I thought they might need their own smells to adjust to the new surroundings

By day 2 I couldn't abide the smell , took the cage apart, washed everything, and threw all the accessories in the bath with hot water for a scrub as it was clear nothing had been washed in forever , I threw anything away like fleeces and cardboard , washed all plastic and wooden toys, ,most of the wooden stuff is fine anything where the smell lingered I've chucked

I've put everything back together, took a full day.

And still they smell terrible .

They're in their own bedroom and I've kept the window open . They're quite skittish and obviously haven't been handled much but they're getting used to me and now coming for a scritch and taking treats out of my hands

They're very gentle but nervous.

How do I get rid of the smell tho ? They actually smell , their fur smells , it seems while their owner loved them and gave them lots of toys and stimulation handling and cleaning wasnt their forte , and I've never owned rats that smelled this bad . I really don't want the smell pervading through my house . It's awful . Rats get a bad press and my dd was moaning they'd smell , I kept saying rats actually don't smell they're really clean etc but oh my god these do 🤢

What can I do ? I've even thought about bathing them but I dont want to traumatise them .

If you ever visit India- the Karni Mata temple was just wonderful. I could have sat there watching the thousands of rats playing all day.

Welcome to the Rat Temple | National Geographic

At first glance, this temple in northern India looks like any other. But this temple also houses other deities. And there's not one...not two...but more than...

Rats don't bite.

I've had over 20 and the only time I've been bitten is by a rescue female who gave birth 24 hours after she arrived. She didn't really know me. I didn't know she had the babies and I stuck my hand in. It was just a warning bite.

They are such lovely animals and genuinely loving!

lljkk · 25/09/2023 22:22

Awwwwwwww.... More ratty pics, please.

we had a bitter, though, actually 2. One when I was a kid, she had PTSD & mostly was fine. I dunno why the other (who died about 13 yrs ago now) was a vicious thug. Her 3 cagemates were fine, friendly. We had to do all sorts of tricks to deal with the biter. I am only person she never drew blood on, we couldn't handle her at all until.... She became placid when old & she grew a huge tumour. Suddenly she was as nice as all the others. <shrug>

Rats are the most lovely pets. Mine used to sit on my shoulders and snuggle under my chin. They genuinely love people, like little dogs in rodent form. I’d have them again in a heartbeat but DH has a phobia, and there’s no convincing him. Lovely little creatures and have real personalities.

bemorebernard · 25/09/2023 22:33

They're currently thundering up and down the landing 😊. Just neared a tiny squeak . Very cute .

I'll pop them back in the big cage soon . They come running when I open the small cage normally but they seem to be enjoying freedom just now ,

All sat washing . Stopped trying to steal my wine . They are in a pile near their door preening like good girls .

I'd love to visit India . Maybe one day !

Are they easy to get back in their home?
How much do you give them free roam time?

MenopauseSucks · 25/09/2023 22:41

Have you tried white vinegar & bicarbonate of soda to wash everything - cage & plastic toys, etc? I used it once a week & it kept it all nice & clean.

Ohyoudodoyou · 25/09/2023 22:45

Returned to this thread, this is so lovely to read and thanks for the photos, I can imagine how wonderful it would be to have those little sweeties around.

Thanks if that's not harmful I'll try it m
I think the main issue was they'd just never had anything cleaned , have to say they themselves now
Don't smell and the cage is much better!

My hoover is exhausted tho - I hoover daily . That floor is from todays escapades only . I open the cage frequently to say hi and half the cage drops on the floor 🙈

The size of that cage!

Fascinated by this thread, I'd no idea they could be so sociable and friendly. Good on you OP for taking them in.

I give them around 45 mins a day - up until tonight they've been very easy to get back in however tonight they found they're fast little feet and gave me the run around - I'd get one in and one would jump out 😂.

Normally they just run back to the safety of the cage when they've all had enough and they tend to follow each other .

Rats are very active and a decent size cage is a must . This one however is huge , perfect to keep 5 active girls happy healthy and fit .

This is really interesting - I don’t know why but I never imagined people would want rats as pets. They do get bad press didn’t they, but yours are actually quite cute!

bemorebernard · 25/09/2023 23:11

These girls are sweet but skittish , now when I had my others I had 3 big fat lazy enormous boys and my god they were the chillist of any pet ever , I'd have all three tucked into a hoody and they just lay there and sleep while I wandered about . They licked my face , they bruxed ( that's the rat equivalent to purring ) and were just big squidgy cuddly toys . They all weighed over 900g . All massive . Loved them . Sobbed like a baby when they died .

They definitely get undeserved bad press . I aren't sure why because they're far more active loving interactive and better than most small pets .

Oh wow that's amazing.
Is that unusual for rats?
Where did you get yours from?

bemorebernard · 25/09/2023 23:55

My boys were all from breeders except the baby boy I rescued him had been found in a garden and was in pets at home adoption centre

My girls back then we're from the pets at home adoption centre but mummy had the babies while in there so I too them all so not pet shop bred

There are loads of reputable rat breeders . I was recently on a wait list and she wanted an application form , to
See the cage , to know what food they'd have (always from rat rations and NEVER generic rat pellets ) breeders really care where they're babies go and they're socialised and well bred - better than a pet shop . I just happened to take rats from adoption but weren't bred by pets at home .

There are also forums and I've always been happy to
Take rescues but they're not always easy so a bit of experience is good if you take rescues. For a novice rat owner I'd say find a rattery and get on their wait list because you'll know you are getting well handled friendly well bred rats .

OP posts:
bemorebernard · 25/09/2023 23:58

I took
My adoptees and mixed them with rattery bred rats for socialisation.

My rescue boy really needed company and to learn how to be a rat . He came on leaps and bounds with the two boys I took from a breeder .

They're really forgiving and learn to socialise fast . But they are not animals that do well alone . They need social interaction and company of other rats .

What are rat rations?

And where can I find rat breeders?
