My hamster is dying, I think. Warning: video attached. Please advise.

Hi everyone. Please help. My daughter has just found our hamster immobile and on his back. At first I thought he was dead for sure. But he does seem to be taking the odd draw of breath. Could he be in hibernation? Can this happen at any time of year? It's just my luck that all the vets are now closed.
Can anyone please advise? We're so upset here. First pet hamster we've owned, so please excuse our ignorance Sad

I know my dh once revived our 'dead' hamster by wrapping him up and rub him vigorously! We also gave him some sugary drink (apple juice I think?)
This revived him and he lived for another year!

Obviously I'm no professional!

Yes have also revived a ‘dead’ hamster with apple juice! Make sure he’s warm, it’s dark and quiet and see what happens.

Balloonhearts · 03/08/2023 19:47

Apple sauce also works. Try and get some water into him if you can and feed baby food if that's all he'll eat. The kind for very young babies. Egg custard is usually a hit or the Cow and Gate Sunday dinner one. How old is he?

Your vet will have an 'on call' vet for use in an emergency, your hamster needs medical treatment ASAP

RainRainPissOff · 03/08/2023 19:55

someone I know revived theirs by warming it up.

Ive had a few hamsters. The first one sadly died similarly to how you describe and the other one had ‘wet tale’ and the death sounded similar. Can you see a wet patch on him at the back? (I think it was underneath) it’s a common way for them to die. Both mine died before we got to the vet.

Hi everyone. Thanks for your replies. Pickles is nearly 2 years old, and is a Syrian. I didn't notice until tonight that he isn't his normal chubby self. He seems to have lost weight rapidly and had taken to his bed more than normal. I wish to God I had taken him to the vet earlier, but thought he was slowing down due to age.
I have tried the apple juice thing and it hasn't worked. I have phoned the vet and I'm certain he's in the agonal breathing stage.

@JMSA I hate to say it, but 2 years is about the limit of their life span, both of mine were Syrian too. Wishing you all the best I really hope things work out ok for you and he is ok.

Balloonhearts · 05/08/2023 17:14

Sounds like a cancer of some kind. Likely you couldn't have done anything anyway except put him to sleep. Especially at his age. They rarely live beyond 2-3ish.

JMSA · 06/08/2023 02:35

Thanks everyone. He passed away shortly after.
