Looking After Rabbits

Hi there,

I'm looking after two rabbits for my friend, I have had rabbits and guinea pigs before, however quite a while ago.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips or anything I should know?

The rabbits do have an enclosure, however they are free range in a tiled utility room. They have ad lib hay, forage and I am giving them greens, vegetables and rabbit food daily.

They aren't currently litter trained, any tips on helping with this? They do have litter in the areas they usually toilet, however not in a separate container.

Thank you 🙂

Litter training can be hit and miss, are they both neutered? Providing a large tray with litter and some hay for nibbling helps - such as underbed storage boxes or potting trays, something big enough for them both to fit in and lay down in if they want to.

It's important to keep an eye on their poops, they should all be uniform, dry and crumbly. If they are odd shapes, daisy-chained with hair, sticky, or you're seeing lots of squished soft poops you'll need to amend their diet.

@bunnygeek
Thank you!

We have cats, so maybe a spare large litter tray would work. I am going to give it a go but if it doesn't work then that's fine too.

I don't know if they're neutered, my colleague got them through work, they were taken from a house when the person was hospitalised. I do have them booked in at the vets early next week to get them up to date with vaccinations etc so will discuss then.

That's a good tip, I will keep an eye out. They've all been good so far so hopefully I'm doing something right feeding wise!

Cat litter tray full of hay where they seem to go most and feed their pellets in there as they tend to go while they eat and need hay 24/7 to grind teeth and keep digestive system working so go quite a lot! Move some soiled bedding in there or some poops if wanting to speed things up and they’ll soon get the idea Grin you will want to be careful if unneutered as even if same gender they will fight to death at what can be randomly even when bonded for years sadly
