Guinea pig - calcium, white chalky wee

We have a female guinea pig aged nearly 3 years. A few weeks ago, she started doing very white chalky wees, which left little piles of chalky stuff on the fleece as they dried. (Easy to see on dark blue fleece.) I think we had been giving her kale, spinach, etc, too often.

I stopped all dark green vegetables six weeks ago, but her wees are still white and chalky - maybe only slightly less chalky. She’s otherwise behaving completely normally. How long will it take for the calcium to get out of her system?

I think this is perfectly normal. My girls are 4.5 yrs and have limited spinach etc but plenty of hay and the good veg. They do wees like this daily and are in great health. Feeding their lettuce etc wet can be good to increase water intake.

I have a neutered boat who struggled with this. Bet said to use a water filter for his drinking water as we live in a hard water area. That and a low calcium diet has helped him so much . He is a very happy piggy .

I had a sow some years ago who had this and cut out dandelions spinach etc in a few days she showed improvement. Vet suggested buy some Cystopurin (potassium citrate) sachets from the pharmacy and feed her 0.3 with a syringe. It did helps lot, she was starting quite a big stone and this helped dissolve it .

Boar, not boat!

Lots of watery food, some cucumber, (though some day it's not that low in calcium so be careful of portion sizing) at this time of year a little watermelon (not too big a portion because of sugar) is good. Make sure you remove the seeds, particularly the black ones as they can be toxic.
