The main thing is keeping it really clean I think, if it’s a grass run, move it about a bit so you don’t get build up in the grass.

We have chickens and various other animals outside on a small holding. The ‘red top’ fly traps are amazing. You hang them up and away from the area and they attract and catch absolutely hundreds of flies, keeping the majority away from the animals. It’s gross but the most effective thing I’ve ever used.
just google red top traps, got mine online but some feed stores may sell them.

Cleanliness is definitely top of the list. Clear up pee/poop at least twice a day, more if necessary. How much space other than the hutch do they have? Mine have a 6ft shed and 10ft aviary, I'm spot cleaning several times a day and swapping out mucky blankets and pee corners. So far, very few flies around them.

Hutches on their own, are usually too small for rabbits (they need a minimum of 60 square foot at all times) and will mean that muck accumulates much more quickly as they don't have far to go. The wood also soaks up pee if it's not been protected.

Thank you for your replies, she has a Hutch with a run attached and has the run of the garden when supervised, I have ordered some red top fly traps.

When we kept guinea-pigs:
I put citronella gel thingies at the windows ( they had a playhouse that could lift out two windows leaving the space re-inforced with bars/chicken wire and mesh. Covered all bases )
The citronella was outside to keep flies away .

Very frequent cleaning, daily /twice daily . We used newspaer thats easy to roll up and dispose . Hay in looroll tubes to stop them getting too warm.
If they want to snuggle -fleece or shredded animal safe paper . I used anything I'd let them chew done in a confetti cut shredder .

Keeping them clean really does reduce the risk of flystrike especially as they get older .

Mine also had a fan (they have power points in their house) and frozen 2 litre bottles (old lemonade bottles) of water wrapped in newspaper to cool them . Ceramic floor tile to sit on.

They're harder work in Summer than winter !
