Can you recommend the most suitable lining for the bottom of my indoor cage please ? There’s so many choices !! Thanks.

I like the fleece ones, there eco friendly and aparently better for piggies but they are really time consuming with more changes & wash / dry times. Sawdust is by far the easier option, so I guess it depends what your priorities and commitment are.

Thank you - I’m using shavings just now but keen to have something that doesn’t seem to trail through the house. I’m just worried that my little pigs may chew the linings?

I tried everything with our piggies over the years .
We had a wooden pighouse for nice weather and in winter they came indoors to the small bedroom (no door and radiator off) with a big deepbased cage pr a C&C depending on what we needed .

Fleece needs an absorbant layer underneath, scentfree deteregent , no fabric conditioner and a PetBag to wash it in to protect your machine

We used - Megazorb, EcoBale ( horse beddings recommended for rodents )
a rodent safe wood based cat litter
fleece
piggie safe paper done in a confetti shredder

But really , what ours liked was cardboard (especially on C&C to protect their paws) , puppy pads , newspaper and a big box of hay (2 doors for safety)

If I gave them solid hay -maybe in summer , or if one had an eye injury , or maybe to curtail their mess ha ha - they'd just glare "Well this is a bit shit isn;t it" ?

Sawdust and shavings can affect them respiratory wise .
And don;t get me started in lemon or lavender shavings - they don't need fake smells . Just clean the bloody cage <looking at you Pets@Home>

I use fleeces. Proper made to order ones with the absorbent layer in. I tried making my own and they weren't as good and by the time if bought the stuff they weren't any cheaper.

We’ve used wood shavings, which made 1 piggy sneeze a lot, megozorb, which stopped the sneezing but was smelly and trails around the house even more than wood shavings and now expensive fleece bought to order liners for a c&c cage. The piggies like the fleece liners and it takes less time to shake and brush and wash them than it does to completely empty out the wood shavings, clean and replace them. I don’t think it’s at all good for the washing machine, we do have a wash bag for the liners but it is a lot of washing all in all. Personally I preferred wood shavings as that seems to cause less smell overall and need fewer complete clean outs. But the pigs like the fleece, which doesn’t make them sneezy but it does need washing a lot. So I can’t give a clear recommendation, I find the washing a bit much tbh, though I love the piggles. By the way our expensive and fairly new C&C cage seems quite rickety too, but that’s a whole other thread.
