My Guinea pig has this on her back

Hi all. Please could anyone advise if this scab
on my Guinea pig’s back is caused by mites? I will phone the vet first thing in the morning but wondered if I could do anything to treat it before them. She doesn’t seem distressed and I can’t see any mites. She has a companion and they normally get on well so don’t think it’s a bite either. Thank you

Take it to the vet.

Albgo · 10/07/2022 20:26

Go on the Guineapig forum and seek advice there.

Id recommend a vet that is experienced at treating Guinea pigs as so many vets are quite rubbish with them.

If you happen to live in the SE I can recommend a few.

That’s great, thank you Albgo. I’m in SE London so if you do happen to know any near here, I’d really appreciate it.

If you can get to Ewell in Surrey I can't recommend Anne at Goddard Vets enough.

She is worth travelling for. She's a serious expert in Guinea pigs and has saved so many of my piggies lives over the years.

I had a guinea pig with this. I was prepared for the worst, but it was an abscess. The vet squeezed it to get at the gunk out. It looked very similar to yours.

Afterfire · 10/07/2022 20:56

I am going with an abscess or infected bite. It doesn’t look like mites to me- generally they leave a drier patch with white flakes. I’m not a vet though just going by my many years of having piggies - we currently have 4. Definitely a vet job!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/07/2022 20:56

I think I'd be inclined to bathe it with warm salt water while you wait for the vet appt.

Egginton29 · 10/07/2022 21:40

Thank you all, really helpful. I’ll give it a bathe now and check how it’s doing in the morning.

Your guinea-pig is the most beautiful colour !

Mites tend to show themselves on the rump , dry flakey and intensely itchy .
You say they get on so you don't think its a bite but even the most laid back cage-mates can get snippy ( and sows in season can be quite feisty )
A cage mate might "barber" (over doing grooming and gnawing hair)

YY to warm salt water bathing , it won't harm her if she washes the area (or er cagemate does)
If any of my pigs had an eye injury ( sctrach or haypoke) we did the salted water then their cagemate would wash the eye - the Restorative Power of Guinea-Pig Spit with all those probiotics from their pooh eating <gross but hey !>
Until our last girl on her own who we spent two weeks , gels . drops and ££ at the Vet treating ( it did heal , but Guinea-Pig Spit would've helped here !)

Good Luck at the Vets

Egginton29 · 11/07/2022 20:29

Thank you all, I’m bathing it with warm salt water and it’s starting to look a bit better so will
keep a close eye on it but looks like it might be healing.
