Kittens from a ‘farm?’

Panda378y · 03/06/2022 22:40

We live near to a place that advertises produce on a shitty wooden board outside of their house/farm. Most of the time it’s fruit and veg but at this time of year it’s ‘kittens’ 😫. Is it a bad idea to get what is essentially a feral kitten??

You know it is. Why don't you try and think of why it would be a good idea?

Janedoe82 · 03/06/2022 23:01

My childhood cat came from a farm. He was great. Friendly and a fab mouser

Hugasauras · 03/06/2022 23:03

Probably a bad idea but we got DCat from a farm at five weeks old 15 years ago and she is the friendliest, most lovely and gentle cat I've ever known. On the flip side the cat we got from the loving family home with lots of human contact turned out to be a complete asshole until he died last year.

But that's cats for you!

beansprout55 · 03/06/2022 23:07

Why do you assume it's a feral kitten because the owners are farmers???? Confused.

sickofthisnonsense · 03/06/2022 23:09

All my cats growing up were farm kittens.

herewithmyfrog · 03/06/2022 23:41

I'd much rather a cat from that place than a kitten bought off gumtree that is from fuck knows where (and dies within a week - which happened to a colleague when she bought one on the spur of the moment from pets4homes or one of those online
marketplaces)

I wouldn't do either. Rescue, or breeder if you must.

Two of my childhood cats were from a local farm. They were lovely. Granted that was in the early 90s so maybe different now

jubileetrain · 03/06/2022 23:51

I think I misread this as being about a kitten farm rather than a farm with kittens Blush

beeeeeeeeeeeeeeee · 03/06/2022 23:52

I had a cat that was also lovely, he came from a farm. He was handled from young age by farmers daughters. Ask if they have been socialised.

dodobookends · 03/06/2022 23:53

Many farms have outdoor cats, which are kept as mousers, and spend most of their time in the barns and outbuildings. So although not technically feral, their kittens probably won't be socialised with humans from an early age in the same way as if they come from a domestic litter.

I'm speaking as a lifelong experienced cat owner who took on a feral kitten, and my advice is - if they are feral, don't do it.

Spyderwillies · 04/06/2022 00:23

One of my current cats was a farm kitten. He is fabulous. Amazing personality, super loving, playful and cuddly.
He's 2 now, very healthy and no different to my other cats.

Ole99 · 04/06/2022 00:36

We have 2 rescue cats and 2 farm cats we got as kittens from the same litter. They are all very sociable and very much homebodies.
No difference between them at all,
The farm cats are currently curled up next to me on the sofa and rarely venture any distance away from their garden or “family” - they go out for walks with their dog who they adore. Definitely not feral at all.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 04/06/2022 06:36

So hopefully (like we did) you go, see mum in situ with kittens, fuss her and kittens and you can see how friendly and socialised they all are. Ours was in the barn, but cat flapped kitchen door. Big, strong healthy cats. Daft as a brush.

romdowa · 04/06/2022 06:50

I got two kittens from a farm and they were the friendliest cats I ever had. Just because they are from a farm doesn't mean they are feral. Few years back I got kittens that were raised in a house with a family and they were nearly feral.

tothemoonandbackbuses · 04/06/2022 06:51

We have a farm cat. Friendly and doesn’t wander far and is very well behaved and doesn’t hunt.

Yabu

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 04/06/2022 06:53

A previous generation of my cats were farm kittens. Three siblings, lived to 14, 17 and 20. Lovely cats & very friendly.

MintyMoocow · 04/06/2022 06:53

My dearest boy ever came from a farm. His Mother was feral, he was friendly and affectionate from the minute I got him home.

ArticSaviour · 04/06/2022 06:53

Every rescue will be overflowing with kittens at the moment. Help them out and get one. In fact, get two. They will have been checked over and properly weaned/fed.

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 04/06/2022 08:01

You need to ask them the question. Its odd to assume they will be feral just because they are advertised at a farm. Around where I live you see boards advertising hens, Guinea pigs and until Covid, Spaniels.
We've got a feral on our farm BTW, he is adorable.
