I went to bring them in and got such a shock to see the younger one of the two had died SadSad it was totally unexpected but dh said that he did feel quite bloated.
The other one has been out in the hutch with him all day which I know is good for him to absorb what has happened.
Do I need to clean the hutch before he goes back into it tomorrow?

I’m sorry about your piggie💐
No idea if you need to clean the hutch, I probably would xx

So sorry about your piggy.

I would clean the hutch out and check for any parasites etc on the other one. It may just be unlucky - sometimes piggies have heart issues or other issues you can’t see, just like people.

I'm so sorry for your loss Sad they are such small creatures but completely steal our hearts.

Unfortunately bloat is fatal in Guinea pigs. This article outlines some of the things that cause bloat. It can be caused by some foods so be careful about what you are feeding the other Guinea pig in case that was the cause.

Poor piggy, you'll need another friend for him, they need to be in pairs, they get incredibly lonely. I probably would clean it unless it needed it.

Wouldn't

Yes this. Contact a local Guinea pig rescue and see if you can match up yours with another one.

Thanks everyone. Our remaining one was a baby when we got him to pair up an older one when the one before that died. He fought quite a bit once in his teenage years and that never stopped. When the older one died we got a baby boar as his buddy. They also fought incessantly and never grew out of it. So he is now 4.5 and alone, but I'm not convinced that he will accept another pig, even a baby. He was paired by a rescue for the last one but it still didn't work.
I do feel that we are in the never ending cycle of replacing one for another...

You could consider neutering him and putting him with a female. Neutering a Guinea pig is a fairly easy, low risk procedure. Two boars together often fight and a boar and a female is often a better match. At 4.5 years old he’s middle aged - he could have another 4/5 years yet so it seems a shame he may potentially be alone.
