Cost of having a rabbit put down?

One of our rabbits is old and unwell. I need to make a vet appointment tomorrow. I have a feeling the vet might recommend that he is put down. Does anyone know approximately how much that will cost?

Oh dear, that's sad. Not sure if this is helpful but I had a guinea pig put down last year & it was £45 so you would be looking at more than that.
Love to you & your bunny x

purpleme12 · 18/04/2022 20:59

I paid about same as above to have my bunny put down

Caesious · 18/04/2022 20:59

Sorry to hear about your bunny. I had to have our hamster put to sleep a few weeks ago and it cost me £44 so I suppose it’ll depend on if it’s a set cost for small furries or if it’s more expensive as they get bigger. Hope you are ok.

StartingGrid · 18/04/2022 21:02

I think about £75 or so but thats not recent so could be more. Is there anything specifically wrong with the bun?

4kids2cats · 18/04/2022 21:07

We also have a very old and decrepit bunny. I’ve taken her twice to the vet actually hoping he’d say let’s do the decent thing and put her out of her misery. But twice I’ve ended up paying £90 for the appointment plus various medicines and painkillers to “improve her quality of life”. I’ve resolved not to go back and just hope she passes on of her own accord. She seems to be immortal, however…

Don't be ridiculous and cruel. If you think your bunny has a poor q of l, tell the vet that and ask them for euthanasia. They aren't mind readers! Smh

Thanks everyone. That gives me some kind of idea

Startinggrid He's seven years old, nearly blind (cataracts), lost weight, not really moving around much, very stiff and struggles to keep himself clean.

Sorry to hear this @Whatalovelydaffodil , prices are quite variable between areas but I think the other posters have given reasonable guides. Just to add on the bank holiday weekend it would be very much more.

Gosh - I’d naively thought that you could request that the vet PTS instead of paying for ongoing treatment for a rabbit. Does anyone know if this is the case or if a vet can refuse and make you pay lots of money for ongoing treatment?
losingthemind · 18/04/2022 21:35

Our 8 yr old bunny was PTS last week - out of hours vet at the weekend wouldn't do it - that cost £160ish for meds, our vet then PTS on Monday £140.

We also have a 12yr old bunny who is now lonesome, but keeps on going....

bunnygeek · 20/04/2022 09:54

When I had my poor 12 year old boy bun PTS it was over £100-150 as I also paid for his cremation and ashes. He and his dear sister now sit side by side on my hearth :( she passed at 13, 2 days before her PTS appointment.

bunnygeek · 20/04/2022 09:56

@4kids2cats willfully allowing an animal to suffer is animal abuse, people have been persecuted for this. The vet clearly sees whatever is wrong with your bun as something that could be survivable. If you’re not going to do that, allowing the poor thing to suffer and die in agony isn’t fair. Ask the vet to PTS.

Lavapalaver · 20/04/2022 10:02

One price for euthanasia and the same again for cremation. Maybe ask to bury it yourself.

Lavapalaver · 20/04/2022 10:05

You can request to pts. Just call in advance to explain your bunny is very old and you believe to be at the end of life. It’s a really hard life for an elderly bunny.
