Baby rabbits

I adopted a rabbit from a friend of the family who could no longer care for it, to my surprise she gave birth to 4 babies a week ago, they are all doing well and she seems like a good mum to them, just wondering when I should clean her hutch and the nest, which is in a corner of the hutch, there is conflicting advice online! I also have only been letting her out for short periods throughout the day (vets advice) she normally free runs all day in my enclosed garden with supervision, should I be letting her out for longer periods? She seems frustrated inside the hutch but I'm worried she won't feed the babies

Hi @pittameinhummus, we're just giving your thread a bump in case anyone's on hand to give you some baby bunny advice.

Congratulations! I breed rabbits, the babies are the best time wasters :-). Mums only need to feed their babies twice a day, so they just need a dark corner with plenty of bedding, so that mum can "seal in" the babies whilst she forages. I use little wooden nest boxes. The babies will just sleep quietly until she returns.
Don't touch the babies until they start to explore their hutch, once they are out and about, they will look for food and water, so make sure the drinker is low enough.

I would let her come and go as she pleases. She has bonded with them now after having close contact for a week so she won't go far. I suppose you take extra care to make sure she is safe from cats, buzzards etc now that she has baby responsibilities.

Thank you again @ANameChangeAgain the babies are doing well! Mum seems happier with more outside time, I suspect the kits may be opening their eyes any day now!
