Bonded pair of M/F rabbits - M rabbit has died - what to do :-(

So sad, the darling buck in my pair of rescue rabbits has died this week. We’ve had them a year. The animal sanctuary said he was 3 and the doe was 18 months when we go them, so she’s now 2.5. They have a large airy hutch in a shed and come out daily.

My question is, will I need to get a second companion for her or will she be ok alone? To be honest so far she seems completely unfazed that he’s gone but I insisted on a pair so they would have company — advice and experiences gratefully received, please!

Hi OP, avid rabbit owner here. I’ve had indoor rabbits for the past 4 years and my buck has had two does, both have been rescues and have died from sudden overnight deaths (were starting to call our buck Henry VIII, due to the number of wives he’s had!).
Our boy is unfazed without his most recent wife, however he has free run of the lounge and I am at home all day so he has constant company - bunny’s are social creatures and should be living in pairs, otherwise they become very sad and lonely and it can be detrimental to their health. As yours are outdoor, I would strongly suggest speaking to a local rescue and sending your remaining bun on a date to re-partner them. It will be much better for them in the long run even if they seem ok at the moment.

Sending love, it’s so sad when you lose a furry friend x

Thank you so much, @Toddleberry! I really appreciate your reply and I’ll take your advice and check with the sanctuary. Fingers crossed! Smile

Everything @Toddleberry said. My local Rescue has Rabbit specialists that bond Rabbits with potential partners as a service. They must always be in pairs. Husbuns as they call them Smile
