Pets at home animals (do they live long)?

Does anybody know if pets at home rabbits live long?
We have a purpose built shed, run etc all kitted out for rabbits (have had many in the past).
No breeders around the area and haven't been for a while (been keeping an eye out locally for ages but nearest is 35miles away and worry about the distance for them in the car journey home).
I've never bought animals from them but have seen a couple in our local store. The only issue is I've heard bad things about their animals being sick and suffering or not living long etc.
So would it be worth risking getting them or would you not bother?
TIA

I’ve seen a beautiful 6 month old rabbit in the adoption section of PAH. I can’t stop thinking about her but I’m concerned about getting a rabbit from PAH. She’s not yet vaccinated or neutered (I’d get both done) and they’ve said she’s happy being on her own, but I thought rabbits were sociable and needed a companion?

Seems to be mixed views and experiences.

Since I wrote the original post we did go and have a look to see and talk to one of the staff members in our nearest branch. They seemed to not like the idea of our set up and tried to get us to buy one of those hutches... so baffled as to why a small cage is appropriate yet a insulated/weather proofed shed with adequate space and housing isn't...
After that we decided to just wait and have since took in a 1 year old male and female who were fighting and cant be housed together. Their previous owner unfortunately didn't have the space to house them separately.

Thank you all for your comments Smile

@LilyGlobe Yes Rabbits absolutely must be homed in pairs. They're highly social. A local Rescue can help you with a suitable bonding partner if you save the loan bun.

We’ve had 3 pairs of gerbils from their adoption centre over the years. Assuming they’re 6mths old when they come to us they have all but one lived to 4yrs minimum. The one that died younger had a tumour and we had to pts. We’re currently scouting for our next pair, none in local rescues and no old/returned in p@h so we’ll have to wait a while.

Over quite a few years we have had hamsters, gerbils and guinea pigs from PAH. All lived long and healthy lives.
Rabbits are social and will be happier not alone. Just be aware that an animal that has been neglected might resource guard so provide several sources of foods in different places..

We bought 2 rabbits from there, 1 died after only a week! We still have the other one and he is 5 now

We got bunnies from there and nine years later they are thriving!

PAH is one of the key reasons rescues are currently over flowing with unwanted rabbits :( far too easy to buy them, very often miss sexed leading to surprise litters. None of their rabbits are vet checked before sale either and sadly often have hidden health issues such as snuffles. No one who breeds rabbits and actually cares about them would ship them off to pet shop for third party sales. I know of a batch of breeding rabbits who went into rescue after a PAH breeder stopped breeding, they were terrified of being handled.

The worst place to buy small animals :(
