Drinking my coffee this morning when I realised dd1s hamster was set on the side watching me! On examining the cage we discovered she'd chewed a hole in the plastic base, just wondering what you people would recommend as
a replacement, the one we have is the recommended minimum size(dd1 has aspergers and did a mountain of research before we got the hamster)-can't remember the actual name.

This our fourth hamster and the first to escape

Gosh that sounds like a shock!
I recommend the Volta which is available here (ships all over the UK). It is large enough to fill with things like boxes and tubes to keep your hamster occupied, and deep enough for about 10cm of substrate so your hamster can dig to their hearts content.

Thankfully dd1 had trained her to.go into a pint glass when transferring her between cages so I was easily able to catch her

Her cage looks nice. Is it repairable do you think?
Could you sit it in another plastic tub, hamster cage base, covering the hole?
The taller cages with more cling space/levels look good. Tunnels are great but they can be hard to clean.

Glass bottomed gerbilarium?

hellsbellswithcherryontop · 18/07/2021 22:45

Managed to repair cage and with ideas from others with the same we have hopefully reduced risk of a repeat.
Hamy is happily building a new nest

Glass bottomed gerbilarium?
We kept my childhood hamster very happily for two or three years in an old aquarium with loads of toys. I think anything like that or a gerbilarium would be fine for your little escape artist.

I can't remember the name of it but it is green & peanut shaped, it was the only cage my razor toothed Houdini couldn't eat his way out of.

FelicityBeedle · 18/07/2021 23:44

Maybe try converting an IKEA detolf? They’re cheap on marketplace and above minimum and made of glass for houdini hams

FelicityBeedle · 18/07/2021 23:45

Oh and most commercially available gerbil enclosures are too small for a hamster as I’m sure your DD will tell you!

paddlingon · 19/07/2021 00:46

For our gerbil we bought an aquarium and then a wire top to fit over the top from Amazon.

Lots of digging space but couldn't escape.
Maybe something like that?

@Hellocatshome
Fair point!

You need a big glass tank (100x50cm+) with a wood and 6mm mesh lid, weighted down. Look for second hand fish tanks on Marketplace, Gumtree etc.

The big cage on the bottom looked really nice for a hamster, but some hamsters just don't take well to captivity.
