Blood in guinea pig cage

Earlybird00 · 24/05/2021 19:54

Have just discovered blood in our 2 female pigs cage and on the wall beside the cage. Have checked them both over and they seem fine - eating and drinking normally. Googled and read comments that it could be a uti and to reduce the pellets - to replace with green veg. Anyone else been in this situation??

Take them to the vets to get UTI checked out. Definitely not freen veh, its generally high in calcium which can make bladder problems worse. Lots of hay to encourage them to drink more.

One of my DD sows had blood in her pee (we used a bed-pad under their fleece and there were definite pinky/red patches) We took her that day , the blood had only been that one day because we changed the bedding daily we saw it .

She was treated with antibiotics and I got them some Selective pelets to mix with their Burgess Excell (you have to do any changes gradually)
You need to make sure they have enough fibre (hay ,pellets) so theu don't get loose pooh.
Make sure they have fresh water , you can tempt them with cucumber , peppers , not too much dark greens though .

Didn't notice any blood on the side wall though females can pee behind them (with some force) , I'd be thinking an injury if it was on the walls .

Our piggie had 2 weeks antibiotics (with probiotics) then seemed ok.....then peed again pure blood .
DD noticed her sides looked quite full and chubby then one side just seemed to deflate . We were left wondering if she'd had a cyst that burst ?
She didn't screech when she peed or hunch up.
She was a lovely full bodied female (ok porky) which was why the deflated side was so noticeable .
She perked up , seemed fine in herself but then took a downturn.
Suddenly she seemed puffed out and dehydrated (you can tell by the eyes looking dull) we were on the point of another Vet visit (which would've been to PTS ) but she took charge and slipped away that day
She was nearly 5yo , it is difficult with piggies when they're ill .

Thank you for your responses. Definitely lots to consider. No blood today and both looking fine. I have given fresh hay twice today and with held the nuggets. Gave washed baby gem which was nice and wet. Gave some museili mix. So unsure who was bleeding although we have one that is a good bit rounder than the other. Going to have another good look tomorrow and get them out in the garden if sunny. Their cage is lined in bath towels so will replace them so it will be clear if any fresh blood. Most of it was on the walls.

Does the blood look quite dark rather than diluted in pee, and splattered on the wall? One of my piggies had a growth that she scratched and she bled like this. The growth was just inside her ear so we hadn't seen it, but the vet found it.

The blood did seem quite concentrated. There have been no reoccurrances since. I wondered if it was a uti but that would be continous. We have had them about 10 weeks now and they are mainly peeing in the litter trays now and it appears normal. Definitely a bit of a challenge getting used to the guinea pigs, we have cats as well and they are so straightforward. I guess it is what you are used to.
