Does my guinea pig set up look ok?

I had lots of great advice when I posted on here before, so now I thought I’d share with you my guinea pig housing now it’s all built. It was a bit of a Krypton Factor mission to get a sufficient size crammed into the pantry, which seemed large until I actually started constructing with c&c. Confused

The odd shaped walls and the large pipe at the back made it all rather tricky. But, I’ve managed to cram in a 3x2 with an L-shaped extension to increase the size by three modules, so I’m hoping this is enough for two pigs?

I need to get another square of fleece for the far end, plus a second set of all the fleeces for when it’s in the wash. I also need a couple of litter trays for hay - I’m thinking those will go in the hayloft (rather obviously!) and in the far end of the extension. Or is just the hayloft enough?

Is there anywhere I can buy a litter tray that fits this sort of hayloft nicely?

Any other comments? Guinea pigs arriving early Jan.

That's a veritable guinea pig palace.

Make sure they they are protected from drafts from the window as they really don't like being cold.

Some guinea pigs are less keen on two levels than others if it involves going down a ramp but all of ours have learnt how to do it, usually by putting some delicious food at the other end of the ramp so they have to use it to get it.

Added to say I'd dispense with the roof on it unless you have cats and dogs, they can be a nightmare to get out with a roof on it.

VenusClapTrap · 15/12/2020 21:16

Thank you. We are getting rescue babies so hopefully they will be young enough to learn ramps! The roof needs to stay due to the resident cat. She’s old and unlikely to be interested, but can’t risk it. Especially while they are babies.

yes, certainly keep the roof on then.

We had rescue babies too and they whizz up and down the ramp at will now. I can't see from the photo, what have you got as covering on the ramp? They need something with a bit of texture to it and not just the C&C grid. It looks like you've got a covering on it but I can't see what.

From the photo looks like they might be tricky to clean out?
Second the window make sure no draughty gaps!
Otherwise wow lucky pigs!

Looks incredible! Wheeek!

Popcorninmymouth · 15/12/2020 21:57

Wow! That looks really great! They will love it. Plenty of room for 2 pigs. Are you going to put tunnels in for them to run through and sit in? They love a good tunnel.

twinsguineas · 15/12/2020 22:03

And things to hide under - we have some really cheap fleeces meant for dogs which they love to snuggle on and under.

I can't wait to see your guinea pigs in their new home.

twinsguineas · 15/12/2020 22:07

I'd take the roof off section by section when cleaning it out, it's so much easier with c&c to do it from above.

Costa200 · 15/12/2020 22:14

Wow that’s fantastic!! We had our two guinea pigs near an external door in the utility room that was constantly opened and shut (we also have a dog and cats) and the draft never bothered them at all, they lived until 7 years old and passed away this covid year. 😥 They had a fab life though, lots of fresh veg, cuddles (not that they were fond) and parsley....guinea pigs love fresh parsley!!! Clean out regularly and you will have two lovely friendly characters to keep you entertained!!!

VenusClapTrap · 16/12/2020 00:07

Thanks!

The ramp has a fleece that’s attached to the fleece liner on the hayloft. We will be getting tunnels and hides - SIL is buying some for the dc’s Christmas present.

I am a bit concerned about cleaning out. Some bits are hard to reach. I guess we’ll just have to figure that out! The roof is in three hinged sections so I can open up the whole thing easily; it’s just reaching into the corners and under the hayloft that will be tricky.

Oh and the window doesn’t open, and was recently replaced after next door’s football collided with it, so there aren’t any drafts.

We use a brush for the dustpan which has a longish handle, that or a long handled feather duster type thing to reach the corners. I was looking at our guinea pigs cage tonight with a view to reconfiguring it but I was told off in no uncertain terms by the official cage designer (ds) 🤣
