Hi all. Just after some advice please
One of our boys (2.5 yrs old) is normally very vocal when it's feeding time.
For the last 2 days he hasn't been. Is ok moving but is being very shy and quiet. He is the more reserved of the 2 boys but not eating is very unlike him. His eyes still look very bright and coat is shiny.
I've have just spoon fed him some mushed pellets mixed with warmed water which he did have some of.
Apart from calling vets tomorrow is there anything else I can do?
We have had GP, and one did have bloat once. I drip fed him some mushed up rennies ( on advice from blue cross) but he was very uncomfortable looking and didn't move at all.
Thank you. I'm worried about the little bugger!!

Could he be being dominated by the other one? I've got two boys and one of them wouldn't let him near the food and he became quite withdrawn and wouldn't eat. I haven't really solved the problem, but every now and again I'll separate them at feed time.
Other than that I don't know what could be wrong. I think you need to go to the vets if he doesn't get better. Good luck Thanks

Thank you. He does get a bit overshadowed by the other boy -so there's no change there. And we have taken him out of the cage to hand feed him but he isn't really interested. Fingers crossed he picks up ASAP.

I hope he'll be ok Thanks

Did he eat ok when you fed him?
Is he dribbling at all or dropping food ?
If its a new not-eating consider it could be a sharp or brokem tooth, maybe at the back (which your vet will need to check, they put a light magifier down the throat)

Guinea pigs love to eat , they live to eat . If it stops something is amiss .
Keep an eye on how they interact . You can give seperate piles of food . You can clean the cageand make it neutral, give them nice new boxes they cannot get trapped in,

Have a look and see if there's anything he could've eaten (plastic, wires, sellotape on a box) that might give you a heads up.

Check him over for any lumps , bumps , injury , bites .

They are a worry , little toads !

Thanks. I ended up taking him to the vets yday. She suspects a water infection. He has had 3 doses of anti bio and some pain relief but hasn't picked up massively yet.
Fingers crossed he does.
I'm still syringing food and water too.
Even his cage mate is just leaving him be atm.
Poor little dude

Hi. One of my GP boys was like this. I took him to our vet who wanted to operate on him because of dental spurs. On advice of others, I went for a second opinion (miles away), and it turned out he had a piece of hay wedged between his back teeth which had caused an ulcer. He was eating again instantly and back to his usual self.

Where in the UK are you?

Also, do you have critical care or is it pellets mushed up? Critical care is a slightly better balance of nutrients.

Is he drinking?

We got some 'recovery ' mush from vets. He isn't really interested in it.
Since having the anytime bios his urine hasn't smelt. It was very strong weds evening /Thursday.
The vet I went to specialises in exotic pets. Which I think GP are classes as.
He will have little bits of we hand feed. And actually isn't to bad being squirted with his meds.
He does look down in the dumps tho

If he's dehydrated then yes he'll need fluids , you can make the Recovery/Critical Care up quite watery .

Vit C ( again dissolved in water and syringed ) are a good add on for an ill piggie . They will usualy get Vit C from pellets and veg but not if he isn't eating as he should .

Did they give you probiotics ( to counteract the effects of antibiotics ) . Again you can get this in Pet at Home .

If he has a water infection keep a check on his skin round his rear , it can get irritated by the concentrated pee , He might need a very quick bum dip ( though he won't thank you for it !) make sure you keep him warm and dry him well .

Guinea-Pigs are indeed Exotics and Complex .Does he have any favourite treat food ? (I have seen myself out with grass cutting scissors , -rinsing and drying and bringing to room temperature -grass and dandelions for tiny rodents in the depth of winter !)

We did give him a nice little spa treatment yday !! Honestly, the things they get me to do for them. And yes to hand handpicking dandelions too!!
Will look into probiotics. Thanks.
How long would you give it for the ABs to start helping. Like I said , his urine no longer smells but he is far from right.
