Teeny tiny rabbit hutch/house

DS has 2 house bunnies and, thanks to coronavirus, it looks like DS and the bunnies will be moving home next term as he only has one class a week on campus until he goes abroad on placement (when I get to rabbit sit).

They currently have a hutch but it's really just a place to keep their food bowls and litter tray/hay rack, and other than that they only go in it at night to sleep. Much as I am happy to share my home with the rabbits, I am not so keen on living with their huge hutch in the house! When I've looked after them before, they usually just sleep at my feet under my desk or under the furniture during the day but they seem to sleep in the hutch at night so I guess they like to have a safe place to retreat to. The heating is set to come on at night if the temperature drops below 16C so the house is always warm and it's bunny-proofed with cable covers etc.

I was thinking maybe we could replace the hutch with a small "bedroom"? They are both dwarf breeds so they don't need a huge amount of space to be able to stretch out. What do other free range house bunny owners have?

I have an indoor cage surrounded by a play pen that our two house rabbits go into at night, but I've noticed recently from the various bunny pages on Facebook that people have purchased the large Hol table from Ikea and cut a hole in the side so the bunnies can go in and out. They've lined the bottom with lino tiles or carpet tiles to stop the rabbits from getting their legs stuck in the holes. Would that be an option? I think it's retailing at about £45 right now and shouldn't take up as much space as a large hutch.

Thanks @HansBanans. You have given me an idea! You can get ready-made small cupboards/bedside tables for cat litter trays with a hole cut in the door, that might make a good bedroom. I'll have to check measurements/door height. Although I've just found this that could work, I think:

Please tell me if you think it's a bad idea!

If you line it with something on the bottom so they don't slip on the plastic then it should be ok 😊

We have one of the above for ours, again they run free in the garden so just need somewhere to sleep. We leave the door open in a pen but you could remove door and place with wire.

What you need is the Ikea Hol!

Google rabbits and the ikea hol - you'll see all the modifications that just involve sawing a hole big enough for the rabbits to hop in and out of.
