New Syrian Hamster - chirping/squeaking noises

We’ve just got our new Syrian hamster today, so so cute!

We purchased a new cage. She’s in her cage & we’ve left her in it so she can explore & familiarise herself with her new surroundings.

We know not to disturb her, she’s making ‘chirping/squeeking’ noises, is this normal? We have had a Russian dwarf and a Roborovski hamsters before & they didn’t make these noises when they were new. So just wondering if it’s something Syrians do?

She’s had a good roam around her cage, she’s been ‘sleeping’ in her bedding but she hasn’t yet been up the ‘ladder’ to her food & drink bottle yet. I’m assuming she’ll find her own way, it’s a big cage!

We’re also making sure it’s not loud or anything either, so we’re doing all the right things I think!

They do chirp when they’re excitedGrin.
Ours did when we gave them treats, got them out for exercise, put new things in their cage etc...Lovely little things and quite intelligent!

They can be quite chatty little things. Ours squeaks when she wants attention. She sits by the door of her cage and waits for us to walk past and then squeaks to chat to us.

Syrian hamsters can be quite vocal. If she's active and eating I wouldn't worry. I once had one wake up and scream in the middle of the night.

Update, she's settled in quite nicely, has been eating and drinking, making herself at home in her cage and she's bonded with us quite easily, she's happy to let us pick her up and hold her, comfortable enough to wash herself while we're holding her and will take food from our hands. She hasn't made the same kind of noise as she first did, although we've heard her 'chirp' or perhaps snore when she's asleep! I think she is quite active during the night as she's been quite lazy today! We adore her already!

Syrians do tend to sleep all day and spend all night being little noisy nuisances.

Our old one was extremely vocal when I had to give him a clean in the bottom area (old and very smelly)

RedRed9 · 30/06/2020 20:45

Perhaps she was calling out to see where everyone was/if there were any other little hamsters nearby?

Ours used to do a sort of screechy growl if woken up!
