Anyone with knowledge of birds out there?

Hi. I'm just looking for some advice please if anyone has any to offer. It looks like a house sparrow has built a nest in the guttering right at the edge of mine and my neighbours house. I see the mother coming and going. Sadly today, one of the babies, maybe 2 days old, must have fallen from the nest and I found our cat playing with it at the back door. I got my cat away from it but the bird was dead. The mother came to look for it, saw the situation and flew back to the nest and hasn't came out since from what I can tell.

My question is, if another baby was to fall from the nest, what will I do? I'm going to be extra cautious and try and limit my cat being in the garden without me being there so he doesn't get a hold of any more of the babies should they fall. I just don't know what to do. The nest must be very small and it's hanging over the edge of the gutter so very easy for the babies to fall out when the mother goes to retrieve food. At this point in time, she is making a lot of noises, not sure why? Maybe to get another bird to bring food as she doesn't want to leave the nest? I really don't know as I have no idea about birds. I just want to make sure if another baby falls, we do our best for it. Would the mother come and take the baby back to the nest? When would they start to fly off do you think? Should I put some bird feed out in the garden so the mother only has to make a very short trip off the roof and down to the garden to get food so she can stay and protect the rest of the babies and not have to search for food and leave the nest for too long?

Thank you

Is there anyway you could.put something under the nest that is bigger than it so if they fall put, they don't fall far?
Nature can be so cruel.

Thanks for the link. The baby had no feathers at all and very small wings so I think they must be very recently hatched. I want to help the mother by offering food so she doesn't need to go far to get it so in turn, doesn't have to leave the nest for long but I'm scared my cat will get her if she's in the garden and on the ground too much.

I do have something I could put out. There's a wall between our two gardens directly under the nest and it's about 5ft high so if I placed something on there, the drop wouldn't be as much as to the ground. If I put some blankets in it as well, that should make for a gentle landing. The mum is very small and I think is struggling with the nest but at the same time seems nervous to leave the nest to go and get anything to help improve the nest. I feel bad for her. She did have another bird helping to build the nest as I watched them build it but the other bird is now no where to be seen
