I am crazy not to have pet cover?

Our hamster is limping so I'm off to the vet with him tomorrow. I don't have pet cover, any idea of what to expect when it comes to vet fees for a hamster?!

It depends on the vet, but a basic consultation fee will usually be between £25 and £35. Meds tend to be fairly cheap. I've just been to the vet with my hamster and it was £34 for the consultation and a few weeks of painkillers. X-rays etc will cost in the hundreds, as will surgery, but to be honest you have to seriously consider whether it's fair to put an animal that lives for 2 years under anaesthetic. They do get seriously stressed by invasive medical treatment.

I've looked into insurance for my hamsters and gerbils, but really they tend to need so little vet care, it's better to put the money you would spend on insurance into a vet care fund. Then if you don't spend the money, you still have it. Insurance isn't worth it for the smaller animals.

I’m not sure you can get insurance for a rodent and if you can it will cost way more over their short lifetime than paying the odd vets bill unless you are extremely unlucky .

Thank you for your replies- I thought I had been irresponsible not having cover. I'm very worried about our little hammy. Sad

Hope he gets well soon

An update, we saw the vet today (£30 consultation £18.80 medicine), The vet advised against an x-ray and our little hamster is just on a week of pain relief. As he's putting weight on the foot he doesn't believe it's broken. He's a happy hamster even with a limp.

Thanks for your replies.
