No but I have always wanted one.

MrsApplepants · 02/03/2020 00:05

I’ve always wanted one too. Our neighbours had one when I was growing up, he was old, his shell had been repaired when it had been damaged by shrapnel during the blitz in the war. He’s still alive now according to my mum!

I used to have two Greek spur thighed tortoises named after 2 ninja turtles (original I know) but my mum took Possession of them!

LadyEggs · 02/03/2020 22:20

My son is desperate for us to get a tortoise. I'm not really what's involved?

MumMattersX2 · 02/03/2020 22:33

@LadyEggs needs lots of care with getting the right temperature in the table, 2 baths (at least) per week, lots of poo, feeding, peting daily but how beautiful that they live so many years in your family 100+ xx

Yep

The 100 years thing has put me off getting a baby one

But we adopted one briefly that was 89 and had been given to its mistress when she was 3 years old

Youvegotafriendinme · 05/03/2020 15:40

We have one and I think he’s absolutely brilliant! Runs up and down our garden quicker than we can, will eat your toes if not careful and comes when he’s called.
We inherited him when DH’s grandparents passed away. We have had him about 3 years now but he’s around 70 years old. He’s a hermanns and is currently in hibernation. Easiest pet I’ve ever own and will definitely keep having them. I’ve had them growing up so used to them

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 05/03/2020 16:01

Freddy is a spurthigh

Early 72/3 something like that

He is awake and as usual not eating! Git Grin

Two Western Hermann’s here. They’re an expense to set up and their environment has to be perfect. They need separate UV, light and heat lamps indoors in a big open table with micro environments and heat outdoors. Better to get them outside ASAP with a cold frame or greenhouse, heat lamps and escape proof area. The sun cannot be replicated inside, no matter how much you spend. They need to eat weeds and flowers. They hibernate. Once you have the set up they’re easy maintenance but the set up is a commitment.

LucheroTena · 05/03/2020 20:57

Oh sorry op you have one- thought you were asking about getting one Grin

Crazymummyto3 · 12/03/2020 03:43

We have a three year old Horsfield tortoise, he's still small at the moment but will grow to 20-25cm. He recognises us and comes to us when he hears our voices. He's fab, so much more entertaining than I thought he would be!

mycorona · 12/03/2020 03:56

How do you pet a tortoise ?!

Catty15 · 11/06/2020 21:25

This is our baby Herman, he ( or she!) Is about 8 months old.
Hes kept indoors at present but we take him out frequently in the sunshine, he loves eating weeds!
