Hi just after some advice really.
Ok I had a little boy bunny got him neutered and bonded him with my other neutered male bunny both very young rabbits, they were so easy to bond, got on really well etc.
Last week one of them died unsure why they were both in garden playing, I noticed that one of them, was sort of hiding and didn't look right, I got them both bk in hutch thought they were fine, come down next morning and the one had passed away 😭😭, now I have noticed the one left behind is ok but growls at me when I go to his cage but he's happy to let me get him out,
Do you think I should get another bunny and bond him again?
I think he was happier with a friend.
Any advice would be appreciated thank you.

Hi..I would see how he goes for a little bit. I've normally given them a bit of time to accept their friend has gone first.
I think they generally happier with another rabbit so after a little healing time go for it. If youd only prefer one that is ok if you can give him plenty of attention though

Surfskatefamily · 02/01/2020 07:55

My little Netherland dwarf died in august..same sort of thing. He just looked off and was hiding. I happened to be home that day tho and he died in my arms 😭 so horrible. Vets suggested RHD virus...have you got your bunny vaccinated? Mine was but I'm wondering if it was the RHD2.

They can be so fragile though, of they get it its so hard to pull them through x

Definitely get another one, a neutered female would be best, best to wait a few weeks just in case it was anything infectious

bunnygeek · 02/01/2020 11:03

Sorry you lost a bun :(

Has the remaining one had a vet check just to make sure? As @Surfskatefamily mentioned, is he fully vaccinated?

A neutered female is the easiest bond usually, whereabouts are you located? I might be able to recommend a nearby rescue who can help with the match making and bonding process.

Hi thank you so much for your replies. I'm in Suffolk, I keep looking for bunnies but not sure at the moment tbh, I was thinking of getting a neutered bunny, Chester is running round in the garden at the moment he looks happy, but I do worry he might be lonely ☹️.

He was vaccinated against mixi but not against RHD,
If he died from RHD I would've thought Chester would've got it by now 🤔

Hope Chester is doing ok.

I would recommend getting him the RHD2 vaccine as well as the Myxi one. If he's up to date on the Myxi one, that's a combi vaccine so covers for Myxi and RHD1.

How far can you travel? There's lots of rescues within about an hour and half of Suffolk. I got mine from Rabbit Residence which is on the Herts/Essex/Cambs borders and will rehome to Suffolk. They'll also help with bonding.

Bunny geek.

Thank you so much for your reply.
Yeah Chester is ok, he's running round the garden at the moment.
Can I ask how many rabbits you have?
It's so nice to talk to someone regarding bunnies! They are adorable.
Yes Chester has had mixi combo with RHD1. Definitely going to get the RHD2 just in case, he is fully neutered too.
I am really thinking about getting another one, still in a bit of shock at moment never had a bunny pass away so young, my oldest rabbit till nearly 10 she just passed away of old age in her hutch with her hutch mate next to her 😭

Jumping on board, we also had a bunny die recently (27/12), while she was in boarding with her hutch mate (another female), both 3.
I've contacted rabbit residence, completed their form and currently making initial enquiries, so fingers x.
Like you, we only have our rabbit vaccinated against the combo vaccine. In order to progress with the rabbit residence we are going to need to get RHD2. Current bun looks ok, mood is the same, we well mainly me are over compensating with more attention.
Would be interesting to see how you get on, as you're in a similar place to me... pm me if you likeSmile

bunnygeek · 06/01/2020 16:57

I've got a bonded pair, and I had a previous bonded pair, all from Rabbit Residence :) they have also done two bonds for me. I lost my last pair at 12 and 13 years old, the current pair (bonded by the rescue) are about 3 years old.

bunnygeek · 06/01/2020 16:58

When I lost one of my last pair, I was left with a widowed and confused 12 year old bun, they bonded her with a ToyBun, Ted, who was 2 years old at the time but very gentle. When I lost her, they rebonded Ted with a girl his own age.

I've just seen a bunny on rabbit residence website i would like to know about, I give them a call or email, do they home check etc?

OP posts:
Passthecake30 · 06/01/2020 19:48

@Riv12345

No, we don't know what was wrong with our bun, she was at boarders at the time. They were equally shocked. She did suffer from gut issues every now and then (we had to syringe feed her maybe 3 times in her life?) so maybe that? They buried her there so we couldn't get a vet to check, but tbh I wouldn't have put my kids through that.

I sent rabbit residence an initial email (address on the website) and they responded, very promptly. I sent the completed form and photos in yesterday (form also on their website), and have had a response already.

Passthecake30 · 19/02/2020 22:31

@Riv12345 how did you get on? My bunny is currently at rabbit residence meeting her friend, hopefully we will bring her back at the weekend. Can't wait, it was hard seeing her on her own for what felt like ages (7-8 weeks?).

@bunnygeek is there anything that I need to know for their return? I've scrubbed and scrubbed to try and remove the scent of the existing rabbit and have a new litter tray and toys.

bunnygeek · 20/02/2020 11:49

@Passthecake30 as long as you've given everything a clean and a re-arrange you should be good!! So pleased you've got a new bun coming from RR :)

Passthecake30 · 20/02/2020 15:06

@bunnygeek thanks! Can't wait for them to return now.

Riv12345 · 20/02/2020 17:17

Hi yeah I got another little boy bunny who needed a new home, he is gorgeous little teddy bear bunny, all black with a white stripe down his face, got to get him neutered, he hasn't been handled much so a bit nervous, he's got big blue eyes!
His name is Finlay
But my granddaughter likes to call him chocolate!!
