Rabbit has infected abscess wwyd?

Hi all, cant sleep as I'm in a quandary over one of my rabbits.
We have 3 house bunnies and one has had an abscess on her stomach which burst and got infected. we saw a vet today and she gave us antibiotics and said bunny needs surgery to have lump removed. However when she checked bunny over she found 2 other lumps and said it's rare for a rabbit to have more than one abscess and thinks it could be cancerous. Vet explained that removing all the lumps under surgery could put more stress on our poor bunny and she could die from the anesthetic but still would go ahead and remove if we agree. I booked her in for friday.
Since coming home I've googled the hell out of rabbit abscesses and rabbit cancer and find myself leaning towards having her put to sleep because of the pain and stress she would have to go through for treatment but then I feel I should do everything I can for her she is such a loving bunny. I'm so conflicted. She is 6 years old so not young in rabbit years. I guess really this is a what would you do? or if you have been in this situation can you give me any advice.
Thanks

Such a dilemma :(

With one infected and an op being needed, you could ask for them to go ahead with the op and see what is going on, if it does look like it is cancer, they can choose to let her go then. It's better to let them go while they are still happy rather than drag it out until they are in obvious pain and discomfort.

This is the hardest decision for pet owners :(

Is your vet a rabbit specialist?

Solitarycaddis · 26/09/2019 12:36

So sorry op as I know how horrible this is Flowers

I had exactly the same issue and I'm afraid it didn't end well.

Opted to go for the op and that was good because she was no longer in pain (you know it's bad when a prey animal can no longer mask pain). The trouble was that it took ages to heal. She stayed in the surgery a while (and endured all the stress that that entails). Then she came home for 10 days during which we were flushing out the wound and giving her special soft feed four times a day. And it nearly healed totally and she was much happier in herself. Then at the last minute she suddenly started going backwards and she went back to the vets and we collectively decided to pts. She was seven and I was really Sad for putting her through all of that only for her not to recover in the end. If I had to make the same decision I'm afraid I would have put her out of her pain and then pts almost immediately. Sad

So sorry op. Each animal and owner is different and its so hard with rabbits in particular. Flowers

Thanks bunnygeek.
purpleme12 yes our vet is a rabbit specialist.
I spoke with the vet today and said we would go ahead and pts. She is in obvious pain and even though it breaks me up it's best for her in the end as she wont have to go through more tests or treatment which will stress her out with no guarantee of healing her.
Solitarycaddis I'm so sorry you had to go through it too. It's got to be the most difficult decision to make as they are not just rabbits but part of the family.
So at 9am tomorrow we will be saying our final goodbye.

Sorry to hear it but I honestly think you have made the best decision for her.
I have had a couple with abscesses. The first had an op to remove it, but it never healed properly and I ended up having him put to sleep. The 2nd one, I had put to sleep straight away as I didn't want to put him through the pain and stress.

purpleme12 · 26/09/2019 21:28

It's so stressful when they're poorly :-(

Solitarycaddis · 27/09/2019 16:06

I hope you are ok op and the end was peaceful for your lovely bunny. Sometimes we have to make hard decisions to ensure they don't suffer Flowers

Hope everything went smoothly today Kitty and your beautiful rabbit slipped away peacefully .

I was reading up on euthanasia when I had one of my guinea-pigs PTS .
Euthanasia means "Good Death" which is what we would all wish for our small pets .
It is a fitting end to a Good Life , I think.
