Looks like a rat to me. Sorry if that’s not what you want to hear....

bonzo77 · 17/07/2019 15:27

It’s not a mouse. Probably a rat but could be a vole.

Yellowweatherwarning · 17/07/2019 15:28

Rat!!

bonzo77 · 17/07/2019 15:28

Take that back. It’s a rat. I googled images of voles. It’s def not one of those. I have pet rats and can confirm they look like that when they’re about 6 weeks old.

BertrandRussell · 17/07/2019 15:39

When i say “It looks like a rat to me” I was being British. OP, that is definitely a rat. And there will be lots of them.

OurChristmasMiracle · 17/07/2019 15:42

It’s a Rat and yes there probably is a nest in the overgrown garden.

TumbleTwit · 17/07/2019 15:42

Contact local council pest control team. They will be very keen to solve a rat problem ASAP and determine the source. If it is a source like a public drain they can fix it. If neighbours garden they can get local enforcement team to issue a notice. Most other types of pest on private property are considered your own problem or have a cost but they will be interested in rats due to big public health risk (though will depend on local policy).

TumbleTwit · 17/07/2019 15:43

And yeah looks like a rat to me, defining features are a snub nose and thick, hairy tail, and tail same length as body.

Blossom4538 · 17/07/2019 16:15

We have one living in our wall cavity!! 😬 failed to catch it so far.

I think the Gruffalo can’t be far behind.

Yep,sorry it's a ratty. My cat brought me a fully grown one that I swear was half the size of my cat! Thank fuck he'd killed it outrightShock

Blossom4538 · 17/07/2019 16:32

Yes, we had one larger one a while ago, half eaten 🙈

Bellatrix14 · 17/07/2019 16:42

It’s a baby rat. You’d be surprised how small wild mice are!

lululatetotheparty · 17/07/2019 16:43

Baby rat!

TumbleTwit · 17/07/2019 17:15

Please call out pest control. It will cost you, but rats carry dangerous diseases. They are not harmless like mice. They will pit down poison or possibly humane traps if you want to pay more, and find the root cause of the problem. They breed fast, there will be lots of them. You can pay for local council pest control or go to someone like rentokil.

TumbleTwit · 17/07/2019 17:15

Actually possibly not humane for rats. Just got to kill them I think :(

roothyb · 17/07/2019 17:19

Im telling you right now - you have more than one I'm afraid. They don't hang about on their own 😂 absolute nightmare things. Burn the house down and move out x

RonnieScotts · 17/07/2019 17:23

That's a rat, this is a mouse (and they are tiny)

Rat 😬

nocoolnamesleft · 22/07/2019 00:21

Take off and nuke the site from orbit. Only way to be sure.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/07/2019 00:36

Definitely. If they're in your cavity they need dealing with - rats have been known to chew through electric cables, and vermin damage is often not covered by household insurance I believe.

hadthesnip2 · 22/07/2019 00:38

Beat me to it @MrsMoastyToasty.

My son has a Siberian hamster. I've lost count the times I've repeated that line from FT

NewName54321 · 22/07/2019 01:34

Have you got any standing water around your property that might be attracting them, e.g. a broken drain (glares at landlord)?

Not all councils have a pest control service. Their website will tell you whether they have or not (if you are in a non-unitary area, you want the council that you pay your council tax to).

That said, you need someone in to deal with this, ideally tomorrow before they chew through your wires and burn your house down for you.
