No rescue piggies?

Hello,

We lost one of our much loved piggies last night and are so sad - he was 4 and completely adored. We are left with another male who is really quiet and miserable today (even though they used to bicker a fair bit!) and I started calling rescues to see if we could find him a friend.

None of the local rescues have any male pigs - I've called 6 or 7. I thought there were loads of piggies needing homes? I'm not sure what to do as I really don't want to get a baby and get into a never ending pig cycle (DC are teens), and even if I did, can you bond a 4 yo pig successfully?

Any advice gratefully received!

Hi OP. I don't have a lot of advise but I wanted to help bump as there are some great cavy experts on here.
You can bond a 4 year old with a younger pig, but then as you say you're back into another cycle of pigs and possibly another 5+ years of pig ownership .
Sometimes pet shops (like pets at home) have adoptions, do you have any local you could try?

LonelyPiggy · 17/05/2019 14:02

Thanks for the bump! There are no piggies at the local pet shop rescue bit, and I'm 15th on the waiting list at the closest rescue! I honestly thought there would be loads to choose from! I'm glad there aren't, but it makes my current predicament a bit harder!

give us a clue of your area. we may be able to suggest somewhere.

There is a guinea pig rescue near me that is overrun with male piggies. It's called Avalon Guinea pic rescue. It's in Nottingham.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/05/2019 20:33

What area do you live in.

russianoak · 17/05/2019 20:45

Pigs or guinea pigs?

TheFairyCaravan · 17/05/2019 20:49

I second Avalon Guinea Pig Rescue. We've recently adopted a female from there. She's absolutely adorable and our older piggie, who'd lost her sister, has taken to her so well.

I’ve recently discovered that most guinea pigs travel quite well. If you have access to transport, could you try a rescue a bit further away? If you’re in the south, there’s one in Southampton that has several single boars.

Whereabouts are you? Not all rescues are on the Internet - the one we get our GPs from isn't.

Justajot · 02/06/2019 23:18

Could you consider getting him neutered? That would give you more options on adoption.

floraloctopus · 02/06/2019 23:33

I wouldn't recommend neutering unless you have a very good vet who specifically works with exotic pets as not all vets know about gPs, our local vet will only book appointments with the gp specialist not the common garden vet unless it's straightforward.
