One very small fish

We have decided not to keep fish any more. The kids are not really interested in them. It's my fault, they wanted a guinea pig and I bought them fish. The tank is big and takes up valuable space on the kitchen worktop. I wouldn't mind if people enjoyed them but they don't.

We now have only one fish left. I can't remember it's type but it is very small despite being about 5 years old, 3cm long maybe? What is the smallest size of tank I can safely keep it in? Can I put it in a small bowl instead of the big 40l tank? I will keep looking after it properly and keep it clean, I'm not trying to kill it off, but once it's gone we are not getting another one. And I dearly want the big tank gone, even more so now there is only one fish

Why not give it away to another fish owner so that it doesn’t spend its last days in isolation.

I don't know any other fish owners. I feel sorry for it by itself but I'm not buying any more. It will just keep going on and on.

Do you know anyone with a pond ? I hate bowls for fish, cruel and life shortening.

BettaSplenden · 22/04/2019 17:18

Take it back to a fish shop or ask on a local facebook group. 40l is a small tank. A bowl is cruel.

I do know a lovely local pond. But I assumed it would be killed off by the change in water and temperature. It's only cold water indoors but still, it's quite warm in our house.
I would love it to swim free in a pond. I feel so sorry for it.

Advertise on facebook

It's illegal to release fish into public ponds or waterways. If it's not a Goldfish, it wouldn't survive anyway.

Fish stores may take the fish back, give them a call.

A bowl would kill it, it would basically slowly suffocate as its gill tissue erodes from ammonia. Not a nice way to go.

MashedSpud · 23/04/2019 13:26

Don’t get a bowl, they don’t hold enough water and there won’t be enough room. You probably wouldn’t be able be to fit your current filter in there too.

A lot of fish are shoalers and are stressed being alone.

Take a pic of it and offer it up on fb to someone with similar fish who has an established tank.
