I;m yearning for a hamster, and have been looking for a suitable habitat, I;ve read up on sizes and stuff, so know I need to get as big as possible,

Have come across the omlet qute, and really like the look of it - can anyone offer a review?

Have seen a couple of reviews on youtube, which are ok, but the comments have been mixed

What size is it??

AnnieOH1 · 28/03/2019 20:10

I wouldn't use it for larger breeds personally, far too small in my opinion. We rescue rodents of varying shapes and sizes. The smaller hammys can be very fast and snappy (although some make fabulous pets they're the exception if you're looking for something pet-able iyswim). There are plenty of good cages on the market, but one word of advice if you go with the Rotastak tube type make sure you secure the tubes with tape or similar. Hamsters are total buggers for working out how to open them, and in hot weather the fastenings can expand and let hammy out...

It looks smart but doesn't give a lot of footprint, just height. We got a hamster last summer and changed her cage to a Hamster Heaven after just a couple of weeks as I couldn't bear to see her staring out of the cage, which was too small. It takes up quite a bit of space but she is a very happy little girl. We did have to take the tubes off it however as she took to living in them completely and wouldn't leave them to go to the toilet and she became quite smelly. In stead we bought a bamboo tunnel and a plastic tube to fit it in and 'buried' it. That worked much better.

I've seen a few like that and they are quite easily escapable for a determined hamster. Also, hamster wee really smells and if that is wood it will absorb and be tricky to clean. All things to consider but you are obviously putting proper thought into this which is good.

Have a look and see if there are any hamster enthusiasts/breeders near you. They are generally better to buy hamsters from than a pet shop and also more than happy to share their knowledge.

Not a hamster expert but I have been led to understand that the cage pictured above is only about a third of the size needed by a Syrian. I didn't like the curly/pod type - I'd go for a big glass tank with a very fine mesh net.

tea4two4three · 28/03/2019 22:39

If you mean the one I posted it's 80cm x 50cm x 50cm. More than big enough for a Syrian. Two thirds bigger and it would be the size of a small room!

Look at living world green eco habitat. The pictures of what people have created with the space are awesome!!

Ffsnosexallowed · 30/03/2019 15:24

Tea4two4three - we had that cage for all of a fortnight, hamster chewed a hole through the side of it. We've got a glass tank now, but smaller :(, but chew proof

guffaux · 04/06/2019 22:36

after much deliberation we got the eco green habitat- also bought a plexi-glass sheet for the bottom to stop the wood absorbing 'spills' (he uses his potty mostly).

nice space and great to be able to watch him, bit he chewed the corners within 2 days!

also bought a plywood run, I can sit in it so we've been able to bond really well, he climbs all over me Smile

love having him, and thanks @tadpole39 for the advice, hadn't seen the eco green habitat on my own, and am really pleased with it
