Out teddy gp had a really greasy gland. What's the best way to get it clean?

You can use Swarfega (the greasy stuff in a tin) rub it in then use neat shampoo to break it all down. You'd need to rinse well maybe shampoo again.

I've never used it myself , I'd worry in case they managed to ingest it , but if you were doing the whole episode at once , you could make sure he doesn;t .

Any oil will break down oil - so you could use olive or vegetable oil, (I used to put coconut oil on GP6 dry bits) . Massage it in well , break down the manky bits with your fingers
Then neat shampoo , massage , rinse.

We've only had one greasy boar , that was our GP1 , big golden agouti smooth boy (uncastrated).
Our Teddy and Rex never had (but they were castrated)

Do you find when you wash him that he's dry in seconds Grin Its like the coarse coats are Teflon !

Is he very "boary" ? Our GP1 was , the others , not so much .

He's not yet 1 so just starting to challenge for authority. Does lots of rumbling and swinging hips to try and make himself look scary Grin
I'd heard about swarfega but was worried too. Will try oil. How often is it OK to bath them?

Aww bless him , he sounds like a good ole Alpha Boar Grin

You don't need a full bath for that , more a bum dip.

We only bathed ours when they went on holiday (to look a bit cared for) , bonding , (to make them neutral) or Damage Limitation (if they got the hump with each other Grin )- so maybe twice a year?

Our lovely Teddy boar who we lost last month was never a greasy one but he was never an Alpha either , though he tried to be rumbly .
They do tend to have quite dry skin with that coat type . we used Gorgeous Guinea Posh&Go on him, and I poached their idea of 'Melts' and did some food grade coconut oil melted in boiled water (then cooled) to pre-treat him.

The problem with bathing them is drying them. Some pigs don't mind a low hairdryer wafted over them , other won't go for it.

So now the other gp has a huge blob of dried grease on him. We've had to cut some out.
Can I use oil on it without then washing in shampoo?

Ah, if the cagemate has boar glue on him, then he's been trying it on with him !

Yeah, I'd just us a tiny bit of oil, then dab the excess off on paper towels to dry. If they do lick the fur a tiny bit of oil won't harm.

DD used to ease it out of the fur , poor GP1 was left with a tiny bald spot on his nose ! (I have no clue why he had BoarGlue on his nose Confused )

Suddenly sows don't seem so bad Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/03/2019 22:07

Ah, grease gland rather than boar glue . (You can imagine what that is !)

millimat · 28/03/2019 22:19

Eurghh! They're as bad as each other!

So is never heard of boar glue before even though this is our 5th guinea pig! That's def what it was. They've been bathed this morning. GP5 is grease free (for now!). Poor gp4 had this boar glue welded to him. Gentle shampoo and lots of rinses eased it off. But his skin underneath looks so red raw - do I need to do anything with it? There's no obvious cuts.

Bathe his raw bits with boiled lightly salted water that you've allowed to cool. Keep it clean and it will dry .

Poor love Sad

millimat · 30/03/2019 21:53

It doesn't seem as red now. They've got on so much better since the bath - amazing what neutral smells can do !
