Hello,

We’re about to embark on a small pet adventure and have decided that a Syrian would be a good starting point.

I would like our new Hamster to be treated as the royalty it will inevitably be. What cage would be best?

Thanks

as big as you can afford....then you can put in lots of enrichment toys for them to play/hide in so they don't get bored

although hamsters can be nippy, have you thought about gerbils (fast) or mice (can be smelly). I have kept most of the small rodents over the years and love my gerbils the most x

I think Hamster would be the starting point for us.

Is there any specific brands that are good?

I have a three year old Syrian in a huge cage.

Will post dimensions when I get home.

I like gerbils the least, rats are great if you can stomach the tail. Hamsters are great rotastack are great as you can keep adding more and more pieces. My hamster as a child lived in a palace that took up a whole wall

Savic cages can be good especially the 'hamster heaven' version. Rotastak is a pain to clean and if you have a clever hamster can push the tubes out of their sockets and take a midnight walk Grin

If you join 'hamsters Uk' on Facebook, and look in the files, there is a section on recommended hamster cages there. Minimum size requirements are 80cm x 50cm and the most popular and cheapest one seems to be the Alaska from Zoo plus at £32.99

Thebookswereherfriends · 28/01/2019 16:15

We have the savic hamster heaven which our hammy seems pretty happy in. It comes with a tube that runs up to a ‘penthouse’ which we haven’t used because hamsters I’ve had before always chew the tubes, but the dimensions of the cage were good.
Whatever you do don’t buy any of the cages from pets at home that are supposed to be for Syrians as they are not big enough.

I converted a 4 foot vivarium for mine and attached it one of these zoozones.

Top tip - put in a small sand box as a litter tray.

Hamster Heaven Savic cage! I have my two in these cages, and they're lovely. Well above size guidelines, come with sturdy platforms (had mine each for over three years, still serving the hammy's in them very well). They're sturdy hitched too, and tall enough to fit in Trixie wheels that are big enough so their backs don't arch when in the wheels. They fit in plenty of toys and huts, and the sides are wonderfully deep for nest building hamsters! I'm so glad you're looking into proper care, most hamster cages are half or less than the minimum size they should be, gets businesses like pets at home just don't care. I hope the photos help :)

We had the savic hamster heaven but personally i found it was really fiddly - bits of it snapped off when I was assembling it and the tubes were very hard to clean . It was a really good size though
