New guinea pig advice please

We are about to get 2 baby boar piggies. I had guinea pigs when younger but I've forgotten much of what we need. Any advice on hutch (they will be indoors but we have a cat so hutch rather than cage is probably safest), bedding, food etc gratefully received please.

Aww PigPog those are adorable little faces , you cannot ignore those beseeching eyes .

And they are the noisiest little animals ever Grin

brizzledrizzle · 01/02/2019 16:18

Aww. Mine stand up so far that I think they are going to climb over the top of the correx.

OP, the hay gets everywhere. According to my mum the house smells of ‘stinky’ guinea pig. I think we are immune to it. I clean millie out every other day, sometimes every day if she is being particularly manky.

Think she shits her own weight daily

pigpog that is adorable! I can see why you cannot resist those twitchy noses.

I will have to work on my reflexes. Now where's that cat

Sorry to hijack but I'm worried that we are giving too many nuggets after reading above post about them being 5% of diet?? No wonder our boars are getting fat! Only got them at Christmas so we are not experts...

Pellets are 30-50g which is about 1-2 ounces per day per pig.

They should be fresh daily ( they are a good source of their essential Vit c, roughage and fibre . )
I always try to give as much as they need plus a few extra to stop squabbling.

Hay should be pretty unlimited but a good rule of thumb is the guinea-pigs body size per day.
In summer your pig will be grazing so not so much hay and they don;t need it so much for bedding, they can overheat.
In winter we stuff their hayboxes full .

With veg we try to give 4-5 varieties .

Readi Grass
A parsley bell goes down a treat too Grin

Fresh water (that they just ignore )

Thanks, I've weighed some out and am relieved that we weren't too far off the right amount! Kale, carrots, cauliflower leaves and a little apple to go alongside :-)

brizzledrizzle · 06/02/2019 05:13

I'm in the guinea pig doghouse. I went in the kitchen several times last night without bringing more fruit and vegetables. Poor deprived piggies Grin

AccioWine · 06/02/2019 18:16

Oh dear brizzle are guinea pigs the forgiving sort or hold a grudge till the end of time sort? (Hoping it's the latter).

We are slowly getting things together for our piggies' arrival. My dh is mocking me slightly as I think I may have gone a touch overboard, but I am very excited they are nearly here and want to make them feel at home as quickly as possible!

Thanks again to everyone for the advice. I'm sure I'll be back soon with more annoyingly obvious questions!

The BrizzlePigs say thank you...well they would but they have a mouth full of kale.

I might not say no to some handsome SAS men turning up.

They hold long term grudges Wink

Only the Rainbow Bridge will cure the Judgeiness .

Our GP3 grew some lovely grass (the velvety feathery type) over his grave which I had to really consider (for 5 minutes) if I wanted to cut it.
But his wives and their 2nd husband appreciated it , so we reckoned they don;t hold grudges in the afterlife Grin

brizzledrizzle · 06/02/2019 18:29

BrizzlePigs don't hold grudges, turn up with any form of vegetables and they are putty in your hand.

Fickle as anything.

That said, maybe they do when they have crossed the bridge as nothing grows over their graves, we've got 4 pig graves in the garden now.
