Guinea pig with red urine

Mr Pig (currently on antibiotics and painkillers post massive disgusting abscess) has started bright red/orange urine tonight. He’s absolutely fine otherwise. Anyone with any experience of this before?

Is it blood? Pure blood or bloodied pee?

Is there a chance he's eaten something that could stain his pee?

Our GP4 (sow) had a very sudden onset peeing blood (there were literally 5-6 blood patches on the puppy pads) She went onto antibiotics but she never did squealing while she peed .
DD noticed that her rather chubby firm sides seemed to deflate on one side so looking back she could've had a cyst that burst?

Male pigs are quite prone to bladder stones . Is his wee cloudy or smelling? Is there anything in his pee patch like chalky matter?

Give him lots of fluids , some Vt C (crushed in his water if he'll take it)
Is he having probiotics with his antibiotics?

Cut down any dark green veg (spinach, kale, brocilli)

We got Selective pellets for GP4 they were lowest in calcium (but we had to mix them with the Burgess to begin with)

Poor boy Sad
Have a goo ole' look at his undercarriage for injury too.
Is he going to the vet ?

He’s had a lot of kale this week. Maybe that’s it. It definitely isn’t pure blood. When he had a ct scan for the abscess they noticed some sludge in his bladder. He’s peeing normally. Vet appointment booked for next week, will give them a call to see if he needs to come sooner. He’s running round the cage totally normally this morning!

One of my girls has had a few bouts of cystitis (which can be caused by an infection, bladder stones or kidney stones) - it manifested itself first as pink (not bright red) wee, then as dribbling wee and squeaking/pain when doing a proper/big wee. If you think it might be cystitis then it may be worth getting him to a vet asap as antibiotics and painkillers/meta calm sorted my girl out in no time. Like your boy she was 100% fine otherwise...

Both our girls do get cloudy wee if they've been having too much dark green veg but never orange or red, so I wouldn't have thought it's that alone.

Max its the oxalates in dark green veg that is the concern, increases the risk of calcium built up leading to stones.
It's the things they like - parsley, spinach, coriander, brocilli that's the risk sadly .

Mr Pig is already on a/biotics for his abscess but he might be dehydrated if he's unwell (even if he's not outwardly showing illness )

My GP1 did the most magnificent peach wee till be realised he'd been munching red&yellow peppers Shock

And my first guinea-pig peed blue (and did navy droppings) after helping himself to my DSis craft paper .

Wow thanks for that info 70, they really are complex little animals aren't they? Hope Mr Pig is better OP!

He’s fine now! Stopped the kale, he’s already on antibiotics and probiotics for the abscess so hopefully it’s just one of those things. Love the wisdom on this board.

Awww bless him, he looks well judgey but good to hear he's improving ,

We had to bath Bert so many times in his last few days , mainly to protect his skin from the risk of scald from his pee. He flipping stunk .
We bathed his rump, dried him and put coconut oil on his legs and bottom.
He had more baths/bum dips that period than his entire life , poor lamb.

PurpleDaisies · 30/01/2019 22:26

He was not happy at all about being bathed. He’s normally very cheery!
